One Tree Hill: The Slippery Slope Continues 15

Posted by: haro1d

And the knot gets pulled just a little tighter. But that’s about it.

The quick recap: Li’l James had a birthday. Brooke (and Peyton, by extension) found out that being a mom isn’t all cutesy bootsies — there are diaper wipers, crying and projectile vomiting, too. Peyton’s recording studio was in the works, Skills was harboring guilt for letting the wicked nanny take off with Jamie at Lucas’ would-be wedding and Millicent let her new roommates know that she could be one of the guys. Jamie’s birthday had a triple dose of creepiness: Deb hired a clown. Dan Scott showed up. Then Deb apparently did the deed with the clown. Lucas continued pining away for Lindsey, but Lindsey wasn’t having it. Handing over her key to Lucas’ place, she made her exit.

And Dan Scott has six months to live. Or so he says.

Mortality probably is weighing fairly heavily on Dan Scott these days. Having killed his brother, lost years in the pokey for the crime and missing out on any real family life, he has limited power to mess up the works for the OTH gang, and it must be driving him crazy.

If he’s lying about his heart condition, well, so much the better. He’ll be around longer AND he’ll be proving himself true to form by potentially manipulating the OTH crowd with his impending demise. True, he’ll have to face up to the bald-faced truth of what people really think of him — the hatred from his two sons, the stony silence from Karen (because OTH just doesn’t want to be forkin’ out the dough for Moira Kelly’s name in the credits anymore) and the probable chuckles from his almost-murderer and ex-wife Deb, but it’s just going to stoke the coals and wind him up for more mayhem.

Well, that’s the hope, anyway.

Then again, it could be the truth. Dan Scott’s days could be numbered and we could be losing the whole impetus to watch this show in the first place. But it would vindicate my long-held theory that it’s actually the redemption of Dan Scott that’s at stake, the be-all and end-all of this series. Because it’s a question we all think about from time to time: Can someone be a complete villain all of his or her life and still end up on the fast track to eternal life? Somehow, Darth Vader did it in that “Star Wars” series that wrapped up a few years ago, and if there’s anyone on OTH who’s liable to have killed Obi-wan Kenobi in his quest to become mayor, it’s Dan Scott.

Which way will it go? We’ll find out next week when the plot continues to thin …
