Getting Lost: “There’s No Place Like Home, Part 1” Review

Posted by Mike and johnnysweeptheleg

Those of you who want answers might have been a little disappointed by last night’s episode of Lost. Sure, we found out that Jack now knows about Claire being his sister. And we know that the Oceanic 6 is trying to pass off Aaron as Kate’s son. But we were only able to officially cross off one item from our list of unanswered questions. Still, that’s OK, because this is just the first of a three-part finale (with the final two parts airing over two hours on May 29, in case you’ve forgotten). Think of it as Back to the Future II. We knew going in that we weren’t going to get a neat little ending for Marty McFly and Doc Brown. Instead we were left with a preview of Back to the Future III — which, unfortunately, sucked really hard. Hopefully “There’s No Place Like Home, Parts 2 and 3” will be much more satisfying. We’re pretty sure that they will be. Now, on with the recap.

johnnsweeptheleg’s Lost In A Moment:

I’d like to welcome you all to an event that’s sometimes been called the island counterpart to the Bay of Pigs. The wild, cross-island competition where eccentric groups all try to beat one another to reach The Orchid! All we were missing was Burt Reynolds (with ‘stache), and this could’ve been a Cannonball Run sequel.

After receiving the transmitter, Jack and Kate go off into the jungle to track the helicopter. Unfortunately, this is an hour before Sayid arrives with plans to rescue six at a time and word that those on the freighter plan to barbecue the island.

Seemingly, the fate of the island rests on Ben, Locke and Hurley reaching The Orchid before Keamy and crew. So what’s one to do when the fate of an island of people rests on his large shoulders? He takes a pit stop for 15-year-old Saltines. Gotta love Hurley. But at least it affords Ben the opportunity to break out a mirror and flash a gang symbol to all of the West Coast Playaz stationed up in the jungle. Richard Alpert and his Guyliner Brigade, perhaps? It’s one theory, since shortly after wandering through the jungle, Sayid and Kate are met by Alpert. He surrounds them. Tells them to put their guns down. And proceeds to tell Kate her eyeliner is Fantabulous.

Unfortunately for Hurley, Ben and Locke, the Saltine break costs them dearly, and Keamy’s crew has reached The Orchid first. Ben, always one with a plan, however, tells Locke how to navigate The Orchid while Ben becomes the decoy. We’re left to believe that this plan must work since all of the flash-forwards involve Hurley and the remaining Oceanic 6 landing on American soil for the first time.

Initially, all seems to be happy little trees in the future. Hurley gets to celebrate his birthday at home with family and friends. And his dad — once again played by Cheech! — even fixes up his Love Machine for Hurley’s birthday. But the odometer reveals that Christine may be more appropriate, as the cursed lottery numbers stare back at Hurley. Welcome to the beginning of Hurley’s (eventual) unraveling.

Things aren’t much better for Jack, either. After giving the eulogy at his father’s wake, Jack is approached by a woman with an accent. New Jersey? No, Australia. And she’s there to tell Jack that Christian was in Australia to see his daughter — Claire. At this revelation, we can already see Jack reaching for the bottle of booze and his Nirvana collection.

Question Answered

What else has the Oceanic 6 been lying about? That Kate is Aaron’s biological mother and that Jin never made it off the plane alive. Seriously, did none of the reporters at the press conference do their homework? Since Kate was in police custody at the time she boarded the plane, wouldn’t someone have known that she was not six months pregnant at the time? Even Nicole Kidman was showing by six months …

New Questions To Be Asked

Why did Ben allow himself to be captured?

How does Faraday know about the Orchid station?

Other than Sun’s dad, who is the other man responsible for Jin’s death?

Who put all those explosives on the freighter?

If you’ve got questions of your own, send them in and we’ll add them to the list. Check back next Friday for a special post: The Top 10 Things We Love About Lost This Season.
