8 Questions With … David Zayas

1. What has been your strangest fan encounter?

David Zayas: I was in a supermarket one time, and this woman came up to me and says, “Your wife should give you a second chance. I just don’t understand it. You should give me her number so I can talk to her.” I thought she was fooling, but she was serious.

2. You’re at a magazine rack and can pick three magazines. What are they?

Sports Illustrated, any women’s magazine — I learn a lot about women by reading them — and something like Vanity Fair.

3. What’s your favorite sports team?

In football, it’s the New York Jets — God bless Favre. In baseball, it’s the New York Mets and, of course, there’s the terrible New York Knicks. Even though they’re terrible, they’re my team. What can I say?

4. When was the last time you were starstruck?

I don’t get starstruck, so let me think [laughs]. One time I was walking in New York and I saw Morgan Freeman, who’s my favorite actor, and we got stopped for a light and I was next to him and I looked up but couldn’t say anything. I guess that’s close to starstruck.

5. If your TV only carried three shows, which three would you want?

SportsCenter, Californication and — I would say Dexter but I’m on it, so I don’t have to watch it because I know what’s going to happen — so The Shield.

6. When is the last time you felt like crying?

Like crying? I guess I would say … wow. I feel like crying a lot. Why don’t you just put that down.

7. What’s your favorite condiment?

Garlic.

8. Given that you work on a series featuring a serial killer and have worked in law enforcement, this could be easy for you. Name three of the top 10 American serial killers by number of victims.

I would say David Berkowitz, the Son of Sam. That guy who ate people, Jeffrey Dahmer. And then John Wayne Gacy. And Richard Ramirez.

Zayas correctly named John Wayne Gacy (33 victims). The others he mentioned are small potatoes compared to contract killer Richard Kuklinski (confessed to over 100 hits) and Gerald Stano of Florida (41). Gary Ridgway (the Green River Killer), with up to 50 victims, is probably the best known on the list.

Zayas plays Angel Batista on Dexter. The series about likable serial killer Dexter Morgan airs Sundays on Showtime.
