The iconic game show Wheel of Fortune is still spinning after 26 years and now celebrates a landmark anniversary — its 5,000th show, airing Feb. 27 (in syndication; check local listings).
Over the course of 5,000 episodes, Wheel has welcomed 15,000 contestants (way too many of whom have frittered away their money on unnecessary vowels), awarded nearly $200 million in cash and prizes, traveled and taped on location 56 times in front of live audiences totaling more than 350,000 fans, and likely made Pat, Vanna and Merv millionaires several times over. Not bad for a simple variation of Hangman. Although I prefer that other long-running game show staple Jeopardy!, I do have to offer Wheel congratulations. Especially for keeping Pat Sajak busy and away from any more late-night talk show attempts.
