Five Fabulous Flicks, Plus One

Start the weekend — and next week — right with these films airing June 19-25. All times ET.

Wedding Crashers (2005)
Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn are a pair of scoundrels who prey upon the emotionally heightened women at weddings. Of course, they eventually overplay their hand and find themselves in the vice of a relationship based on duplicity, but that’s what makes it fun! Jane Seymour startles as the cougar in the mix. Loaded with plenty of goofball moments, this is one of those that you’ll turn to again and again. TNT (HD), 8pm

June 21
The Da Vinci Code (2006)
In a taut murder mystery based on Dan Brown’s best-selling novel, Tom Hanks and Audrey Tautou race across Europe to solve a labyrinthine riddle before a murderous monk — scion of a secret order of the Catholic Church — catches up with them. Be forewarned: Though a work of fiction, this is the movie that continues to have the church up in arms. TNT (HD), 8:30pm ET

June 23
Rambling Rose (1991)
A free-spirited young woman with a craving for sex moves in with a genteel southern family in this charming comedy/drama set in 1935. The film was nominated for two Oscars — one for Laura Dern for her portrayal of the delightful Rose and the other for Diane Ladd (Dern’s real-life mother) for playing the mother of the family. IFC, 8pm

June 24
National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983)
One of the quintessential comedy films of the ’80s. Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo debut their roles as inept vacationers the Griswolds. With memorable appearances by Imogene Coca and Christie Brinkley, this first installment in the series is still the favorite. CMT, 9pm ET

June 25
La Strada (1954)
Federico Fellini’s heartbreaking tale of the young Gelsomina (Giulietta Masina) and the wayfaring strongman Zampano (Anthony Quinn) — to whom her mother sold her — remains one of the most powerful and enduring moments of Italian cinema. Aspiring film students, heed its call. TCM, 8pm

And for those with HD sets:

June 22
Army of Darkness (1992)
Written and directed with great ghoulish humor by Sam Raimi, Army features Bruce Campbell playing Ash. The film reveals where Ash went when he got sucked into the void at the end of Evil Dead 2. You’ll scream – and you’ll laugh at what are, in this glorious B-movie, intentional jokes. HD Net Movies, 9:35pm

  1. Great picks this week!

La Strada is one of the most arresting films I’ve ever seen. Even when I wanted to look away from the screen, I couldn’t. Truly, a masterpiece.

Army of Darkness. Totally awesome. This is my boomstick! Shop smart, shop S-Mart. Gimme some sugar, baby.

I didn’t expect to like Wedding Crashers, but my abs hurt from laughing so hard after I saw it the first time. Many viewings later, it’s still funny.
