The theme of Sunday night’s episode (“Shake and Fingerpop”) is acceptance. Jessica for her change, Bill for his vampiric nature, Jason for the cult he’s unwittingly joined and Sam – well, his is still coming, but with Daphne showing him the way, I expect to see that cute little pooch prancing on the bar at Merlotte’s some evening soon.
Jessica’s story is certainly the main one, and she is getting both spunky and lovable. She’s gotten over the shame of showing teeth when she gets aroused, and the scene between her and Hoyt was rather reminiscent of those coming-of-age boys’ tales where another part of their anatomy seems to have a mind of its own at the most inappropriate moments. This week, Bill was a bit less overbearing, telling Hoyt that keeping them apart is for Hoyt’s own good. “I never even kissed a boy until I had fangs,” Jessica protests, but later, when she and Bill and Sookie are in the vampire hotel in Texas, she calls room service and orders a boy toy in B+. I can only comment that this is one heck of a hotel where Sookie, Bill and Jessica are staying.
This was one of those episodes where all the really important news comes in the last few seconds. Maryann is revealed to be a shapeshifter who likely attacked Sookie (I’d been going with really powerful witch, but maybe she’s both), one who needs the passions of others to effect her change. And Sookie meets a mind reader just like herself —one who bears a startling resemblance to Matthew Broderick in his Ferris Bueller days.
And in the rush for next week, two more things are revealed. First, Bill is going to demand that Eric tell him the reason he is so concerned about Godric. But, we also got our first glimpse of the powerful vampire himself and he is much more what one would expect after the disappointment that is Eric (maybe if Eric’s eyes weren’t so bloodshot — it’s a silly piece of makeup, and most unbecoming). Played by Danish actor Allan Hyde, Godric is a truly handsome devil. Could there be a Lestat-Louis connection between him and Eric? Sadly, we may never know. He’s in only two episodes and since he is going stake-to-fang with Jason soon, he may not be around too long. Sad for us, sadder yet for Jason if he harms Godric, given Eric’s vow of revenge.
