Five Fabulous Flicks (plus two) to watch Sept. 18-25

Sept. 18
24 Hour Party People (2002)
Steve Coogan is wonderful in his portrayal of the late pop impresario and Factory Records founder Tony Wilson in this unusual biopic that covers the lives and deaths that intersected his enterprise and the music scene of Manchester, England, from the late ’70s through the ’90s. IFC, 9pm

Sept. 19
Dirty Dancing (1987)
It was on the schedule long before Patrick Swayze’s untimely death, but ABC Family will air his signature film, in which he played the dancing instructor who liberated the budding spirit of a young, oppressed woman played by Jennifer Grey. ABC Family, 8pm

Sept. 20
The Color Purple (1985)
In a then-unlikely directorial turn, Steven Spielberg helmed this interpretation of Alice Walker’s Pulitzer-winning novel about the struggles of young African-American woman Celie Johnson (Whoopi Goldberg) as she grows up in the early 20th-century South, faced with bleak, seemingly choiceless choices. BET, 6:30pm

Sept. 21
Little Women (1994)
In addition to Winona Ryder’s starring role, look for young Christian Bale, Gabriel Byrne and Kirsten Dunst in this often-overlooked telling of the Louisa May Alcott classic. Beautiful cinematography and a respectful reliance on the original story make this a worthy update to earlier versions. IndiePlex, 9pm

Sept. 22
Georgia O’Keeffe (2009)
Bona fide movie stars Joan Allen and Jeremy Irons star as O’Keeffe and her mentor-turned-husband Alfred Stieglitz in Lifetime’s biography of the celebrated female artist. While the film occasionally smudges the line between fact and fiction, it is nonetheless a stunningly crafted, beautifully detailed love song to the oft-contentious, occasionally cruel and utterly unbreakable bond between the plainspoken artist and the eccentric, New York-based photographer who was the love of her life. Lifetime, 9pm

Sept. 23
The Adventures of Robin Hood
(1938)
The Sea Hawk
(1940)
Nobody — ever! — has done action films as well as the rakish Errol Flynn. Whether he’s fomenting rebellion in Nottingham Forest or sinking Spanish vessels on the high seas, he’s always one to watch! Catch both back-to back on Friday night. TCM, 8pm/10pm

Sept. 24
Wall Street
(1987)
With the financial meltdown, hearing Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas, in an Oscar-winning role) proclaim “greed is good” has never seemed more timely. It seemed pretty timely at height of the junk bond scandal when this film was made, too. Also stars Charlie and Martin Sheen. FMC, 7:30pm
