Comic-Con 2011: Day 1 in pictures

By Stacey Harrison

If you’re looking for a Twilight fix, I’m afraid you’ll have to look elsewhere. The stars of the tween saga were the stars of Hall H on Thursday, to the delight of thousands of their screaming fans. But while I didn’t attend the panel, Twilight seemed to keep coming up, usually as a joke. While talking to Max Brooks (World War Z) and Steve Niles (30 Days of Night), for their participation in the Deadliest Warrior: Vampires vs. Zombies panel, Brooks mentioned that inevitably, “someone will find a way to Twilight zombies,” meaning that all horror trends eventually get to the point where they are marketed to tween girls. Then Mike Judge, during his terrific panel reintroducing Beavis and Butt-head to the world, revealed a plot line in a new episode when the boys watch Twilight, see the effect it has on girls, and decide they want to become vampires.

But there was plenty of other Comic-Con action on Thursday. Here are some pictures:

The upcoming "Total Recall" remake, starring Colin Farrell, showed off its new-look law-enforcement vehicle and personnel.

For anyone who's ever wondered what a Tweety Bird-themed Volkswagen would look like ...
"Walking Dead" fans could insert themselves into one of the show's most famous scenes of the first season in this interactive exhibit.
Voltron is back on TV with a Nicktoons cartoon, and it was just announced that a feature film is in the works.
Steve Niles (left), author of "30 Days of Night," and Max Brooks ("World War Z") took part in the panel for Spike's "Deadliest Warrior," which filmed a special episode called "Vampires vs. Zombies."
The South Park Fan Experience featured four balloons in the shape of the boys' heads floating high above the Comic-Con crowd.
There was also a bus made up to look like it was on its way to South Park Elementary. Go Cows!!!
I didn't try any of these, but the names don't leave much to the imagination.
Chef is gone but not forgotten. And you can actually buy Cheesy Poofs in stores now.
Two guys promoting "Wilfred" from FX unexpectedly ran into each other Thursday afternoon. A third one came by later.
Comedian Jim Norton was doing field reports for "The Tonight Show." I'm sure he went easy on the nerds.
Johnny Knoxville, who admitted to not being the best moderator in the world, nevertheless did just fine helping Mike Judge (right) reintroduce his most famous creation, "Beavis and Butt-head" to the world. The animated duo returns to MTV in October.

  1. Thanks, Tom. As for the Wilfreds, that falls under the category of “what happens at Comic-Con stays at Comic-Con.”

  2. Great photos, Stacey. Thanks for keeping Channel Guide readers in the loop out there. Also, thanks for not elaborating on whether the two dogs from “Wilfred” chose to sniff each other out upon meeting.
