7 Questions With … “Weird Al” Yankovic

1. What has been your strangest fan encounter?

“Weird Al” Yankovic: About 15, 20 years ago, some fan — I think it was in North Carolina at a water park — followed me around for about an hour begging me to make his kids famous. I had to explain to him I did not have that capability. I can’t make anybody else famous. He didn’t take no for an answer. I finally asked, “Well, what do your kids do — are they actors? Are they musicians?” He said, “Well, no, Al, but you can teach ’em! Then you can make ’em famous!” It was a very odd, uncomfortable experience.

2. You’re at a magazine rack and can only pick three magazines. Which ones do you pick?

MAD, Rolling Stone and Entertainment Weekly.

3. If your television only aired three shows, which three would you want?

Modern Family, 30 Rock and The Office.

4. What’s your favorite condiment?

Hawaiian sea salt.

5. When was the first time you were starstruck?

When I was 7 or 8 years old, I got Myron Floren’s autograph. He was the accordion player on The Lawrence Welk Show. That was my very first autograph, and there’s a picture of me getting Mr. Floren’s autograph, and it was pretty big. It was a very impressionable moment for me.

6. You teased this question in “White & Nerdy,” but you never really answered it. Kirk or Picard?

No, I cannot tell you! I remain mum on that. That’s worse than giving your political beliefs or your religious affiliation. You don’t take a side on Kirk vs. Picard. That’s going to kill half your fanbase right there.

7. Here’s another unanswered question from one of your songs: When is Weasel Stomping Day, and how much mayonnaise is appropriate to spread on the lawn?

Aug. 32 and half a pint. Just to start with.
