RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 6 episode 8: Comedy challenge recap
Ruth Boulet
RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 6 episode 8 begins with the queens still reeling from the non-elimination from 2 minutes ago. Joslyn has become disillusioned with Courtney Act because of how mean an condescending she’s being. BenDeLaCreme is relieved to still be around and other queens are happy she’s there. Some of their comments may be seen as being shady to Darienne, but it seems to not be so much about that. Darienne appears to be taking it that way, though. Bianca’s annoyed by the clucking Laganja who hasn’t funneled her high energy into much productive lately.
BenDeLaCreme drags out her chin
Thankfully the mini-challenge comes to lighten the mood. The mini-challenge is lip synching on her back & upside down. Of course it’s funny – these girls are upside down! They’ve got to put eyes on their chin! Adore loses her eyes & swallows them. Trinity’s chin drag gets compared to the eliminated Vivacious. There’s a lot of shots of Ru laughing his butt off.
A comparison of Trinity’s chin and VivaciousJoslyn Fox’s winning chin
But in the end second-rate Courtney Act, Joslyn wins it and as her prize she gets to set the order of the main challenge, which is a comedy challenge. Courtney is now trying to get in to Joslyn’s good graces by suggesting a lineup that’s more favorable to Courtney. But she actually calls it the way I would’ve had I been in Joslyn’s shoes – Bianca first (cause she’s gonna kill) then whoever you want to throw under the bus, then yourself last. Courtney would like to be second to last.
BenDeLaCreme creates a mini storm by writing her standup through talking to herself. Laganja decides that she needs some privacy so she writes her piece under one of the worktables. For some reason she’s going with a ‘stoner-realness’ theme. Huh?
Finding inspiration under the table
Trinity of course has reverted back to being insecure. I wouldn’t be surprised if she was brought back either on All Stars or another season. She just seems to need more time.
The twist for this comedy challenge? There will be a group of senior citizens front and center in the audience. Potty mouth Adore is understandably nervous.
And finally Joslyn gives us the order of the performance:
Darienne Lake
Courtney Act
Adore Delano
BenDeLaCreme
Laganja Estranga
Trinity K Bonet
Joslyn Fox
Bianca Del Rio
I imagine that Joslyn feels Bianca’s gonna win this challenge anyway, so there’s no point in putting her earlier. The challenge for the rest of the girls is to come close to Bianca and be remembered.
In previous years comedy challenges the queens got to practice in front of the guest judges. With Bruce Vilanch and Jaime Pressly on the panel they could’ve gotten some good feedback.
In the workroom we learn that Joslyn Fox is really close to her grandparents, especially her grandfather. He’s very supportive of Joslyn, which is sweet.
The queens that do well are Darienne Lake, Trinity (Damn you RuPaul for faking me out, I should’ve known better. She’s this year’s Coco Montrese in this challenge.) and Bianca Del Rio, of course. Adore, Courtney and Joslyn flounder a bit. Adore swears more when she gets nervous.
BenDeLaCreme seems to completely bomb. She even get heckled, which seems to come to a surprise to even Ru and Michelle. Laganja for whatever crazy reason sticks with the pot theme even though she knows the audience will contain senior citizens and is horrible.
BenDeLaCreme is told by Jaime Pressly that she had jokes but she didn’t let the audience laugh at them, so she may have been better than the clip shows. I also noticed that there were non-elderly people in the audience as well, so the shots of stunned older folks may have been at the same time there were laughing younger folks. (Pssst…. show the whole thing online, Logo. Please?) UPDATE: YAY! Thanks for the extended scene from the Drag Queens of Comedy!
Of course Bianca Del Rio wins and Laganja Estranja and Joslyn Fox are in the bottom 2. They’re lip synching to Pink’s Stupid Girls. Not to be taken down lightly, they both did a split AT THE SAME TIME! I would’ve done a screen grab to record it here, but it’s way better when you watch it. So watch it again if you’ve seen it already, okay? But in the end Joslyn Fox does a better job gets to stay & Laganja has to sashay away. It seems like a weight is lifted off her shoulders. I don’t think she was quite ready for it. As Adore said earlier that this is not the Laganja she knows so hopefully she’ll use this experience to move on to bigger and better things. And lay off the pot. Or maybe that was the problem – she wasn’t allowed to have any during the show?
In this episode we’ve seen Trinity gain her power and BenDeLaCreme is still struggling to incorporate the judges’ feedback into her presentation. Joslyn seems to be getting into a groove and Adore may be slightly derailing. So what twists & turns will be broughten on next week’s RuPaul’s Drag Race?
