Danny McBride, star of the hit HBO comedy series Eastbound & Down, will return to the network in a new comedy series called Vice Principals, it was announced today by Michael Lombardo, president of HBO Programming.
“Danny McBride and Jody Hill have created a smart, rowdy and unpredictable style of comedy that we can’t get enough of,” said Lombardo in a release. “The idea of them setting their minds on high school was irresistible.”
As Lombardo referenced, Vice Principals will be set at a high school, telling the story of the people who “almost run it” — the vice principals.
David Gordon Green, who will executive-produce the series with Danny McBride, Jody Hill and Stephanie Laing (the same team that was behind Eastbound & Down) said in the release: “When the idea for the new series became too crazy to keep to ourselves, we knew HBO was the perfect place to unleash it.”
McBride’s previous series, Eastbound & Down, ended its four-season run on HBO last year and made a star of McBride as irrepressible former Major League Baseball pitcher Kenny Powers.
“HBO was the perfect creative family for Eastbound & Down, and we’re excited to pack up the van for the next adventure,” McBride said in the release. No word on what character McBride will play in Vice Principals.
The series is slated for 18 episodes, with the premiere date and number of episodes per season to be announced once they are confirmed.
