What’s It All About? Cristela (Alonzo) has been going to law school for six years — she had to drop out a few times — and has her sights on an internship at a law firm. Cristela lives with her sister’s family, though she can barely live with her brother-in-law Felix (Ponce). Also in the house is their Mexican immigrant mother Natalia (Hoyos), who clings to tradition and whose idea of fun is digging wells and fetching water from them. Cristela is forced to decide between following her dreams through the internship and taking a menial job to pay the bills. Thanks mostly to Alonzo’s onscreen charisma, Cristela manages the right balance of humor and heart, and mirrors the comic’s own inspiring journey from poverty to TV star.
