RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 7 episode 2 starts with saying goodbye to Tempest DuJour. And of course we get shady – Violet gets shady about Michelle Visage; Pearl gets passive aggressive. It’s a pretty typical episode open for RuPaul’s Drag Race. Although with Violet many of the girls are like “duh, it’s Michelle’s job to judge you. Calm down, girl.” That was correct, ladies.
And before we get too deep in this new episode – I just found that Logo is posting at least the first episode with running commentary from Bianca DelRio and Alaska. It’s awesome! I added it to my episode 1 recap – check it out. Keep doing it Logo!
It’s in this opening that I’m wondering if Miss Fame & Violet Chachki are actually creations, spores if you will, that split off season 1’s Shannel. Miss Fame has the confidence, but yet can still congratulate other contestants & Violet has the bratty “I’m perfect” je ne sais quoi attitude.
As winners of the mini-challenge, Trixie and Ginger “get” to lead 2 teams in a spoken word and song lipsynch for Glamazonian Airways, the first airline run by drag queens.
- Pearl
- Miss Fame
- Katya
- Max
- Violet Chachki
- Sasha Belle
- Jasmine Masters
- Mrs. Kasha Davis
- Jaidynn Diore Fierce
- Kennedy Davenport
- Kandy Ho
This episode also gives us “The Meltdown of the Pretty Girls.” Some select quotes include:
Violet: “I’m not a dancer, but I wouldn’t call myself not NOT a dancer.”
Miss Fame, when responding to Ru asking about any acting experience: “Not yet. I mean I’ve had some opportunities that could be considered like an entryway to acting but not to the degree that I’d like to see my future evolve into.”
What. The. Hell. Is. She. Saying.
Ginger’s team isn’t nearly as dramatic, but Ginger herself is rolling in the Ginger Minj-isms which I feel the need to highlight occasionally. For example:
Ginger Minj-ism: When you look at the other team, they look like Aryan Airlines.
When working on their choreography Miss Fame, Pearl and Violet struggle. Miss Fame can’t move. Pearl’s getting attitude from Violet because she’s got a small waist, damnit! Tighten my waist!
Ginger’s team seems to have less issues, but Jaidynn Diore Fierce gives us this season’s first disclaimer girl. But she’s not! She’s insisting! It’s not an excuse! It’s context!
Ginger Minj-ism: Solidarity in Solid Girls.
After what seems like a half-second with choreographer Jamal Sims, we’re back in the workroom getting together their airline stewardess realness and jet-set airline eleganza.
Miss Fame shares some pictures of her family with Trixie Mattel & Violet Chachki. Fame shares that her grandfather that raised her was murdered when she was 15. I suppose it was good to get that insight into Miss Fame’s history, but it also feels a bit weird as the girls are in the middle getting ready for the mainstage.
It felt like the girls were asked to bring early drag/the most emotionally charged photos by the producers and at this moment in shooting the episode, a producer yelled out “Fame – photo breakdown NOW!” I suppose we have to have these revelations in the middle of the show now that we don’t seem to be doing that in Untucked but they still feel just as forced.
By the way, how many of you watched Untucked? What did you think? Like the new format? If you didn’t watch it, check it out now (UPDATED: this week’s episode is now below):
This week’s guest judges are Jordan Sparks and Olivia Newton-John, along with Carson Kressley and Michelle Visage. In Team Trixie, Katya starts off pretty weak – she can’t seem to get her lipsynch down. The rest of the performance is pretty good. Team Ginger also does well with Sasha Belle being their weakest link.
Katya, Violet Chachki, Miss Fame, Ginger Minj, Sasha Belle and Mrs Kasha Davis are our top & bottom queens this week. Sasha Belle is called first and up for elimination. Mrs. Kasha Davis and Violet Chachki are safe. Ginger Minj is the winner of this challenge. Katya is the second queen up for elimination and Miss Fame is sent to safety.
In the lipsynch Sasha Belle goes high energy Lady Bunny realness & I think loses a boob in her hair. Katya goes for a more controlled performance with the jump splits, and even more impressively a slow slide into a split for her strategy. She also lipsynchs the Olivia Newton-John song way better than she lipsynched the stewardess monologue intro. And so Katya stays. Hooray! Sasha Belle has been told to sashay away. Studying every episode didn’t help you out girl. Let that be a lesson, future queens.
