Jane the Virgin Chapter 23 recap: Jane the Miracle

So, who else is thrilled to welcome Jane the Virgin back for its second season? I could go on and on about how amazing Gina Rodriguez is, but that might get a bit embarrassing. So lets say that winning a Golden Globe for her role as Jane and the show being nominated for another Golden Globe for Best Television Series, Comedy or Musical is proof enough how wonderful this show is.

We start off “Chapter Twenty-Three” where we left off last season: Sin Rostro took baby Mateo! When a nurse steps into Jane’s room to let her know she’s ready to take Mateo for his hearing test, Jane tells her that another nurse already took him. Turns out, there is no nurse by the name that Jane gave her  who works there. Oh yeah, Mama Bear wants answers now!

As Michael was drinking away his feelings at the bar and feeling sorry for himself, he gets a call from Sin Rostro. Turns out she’s willing to work with him in order to get Mateo back. Is she trying to make him feel worse by getting him involved with his ex-fiancé’s baby business?

Michael lets Rafael and Jane know that Mateo is with Sin Rostro and that she wants to work out a deal with him: She’s interested in a firefly pin that Luisa took from her. Doesn’t seem too hard to solve the issue — just get the pin back from Luisa.  Jane’s maternal instincts quickly took over as she got herself out of the hospital bed and waddled away with Michael and Rafael to get her baby. She’s on a strict breastfeeding schedule and would hate to mess things up.

We’re all aware that Luisa’s emotional train wreck of a life has placed her in some tricky situations so far, and yet again, Luisa has failed to help out her family. Her new girlfriend, Juicy, wasn’t too happy when she found out that Luisa kept a box full of her ex-girlfriend’s things. Thanks to that, Michael and Rafael had to jump in the pool to search for Sin Rostro’s pin. Luckily, Jane was able to find it in the pool’s filter. Way to go, Mama!

After finally tracking down Sin Rostro’s pin, Michael met with Nadine to get Mateo back, but it appears that Sin Rostro still has her claws in her. You can do better than that, Nadine! She lets Michael in on a little secret: the chip inside the pin contains all of the faces — before and after — that Sin Rostro has changed. Michael still cares for Jane so he trades the pin for Mateo. At last, Jane was able to be reunited with her son. Michael to the rescue!

Ah yes, we cannot forget about Petra. Ever since she, er, got her hands on Rafael’s sperm, she has been trying to think of a way to get him back into her life. After finding more cons than pros about being pregnant, she’s still unsure as to what she’ll do with his donation.

Meanwhile, Jane has become an overnight sensation. People are crediting their own pregnancy to her just by hugging her and won’t leave her front yard. It’s all thanks to Rogelio for tweeting out the Amber alert that was issued for Mateo. He then tweeted about Mateo’s safe return which made people Google Jane’s name. This then brought up the website that Jane’s stepsisters made, calling her the next virgin miracle.

Petra has a flashback to about five years ago when she and Rafael were pregnant. Turns out she was also pregnant with a baby boy. The couple seemed thrilled to become parents — especially Petra. It’s so odd to think about her being happy to have a baby now.

Rafael asks Michael for some help with the Villanuevas, because he seems to be an expert in that regard. Michael could have sabotaged Rafael but he’s a good guy and tells him to read a couple of baby books.

And when Abuela doesn’t know the answer to something (!), his time comes to step in and shine. Rafael lets Jane know that her problems with breastfeeding Mateo only means she’s starting to produce milk. Jane invites him to stay the first couple of weeks so Mateo has his dad.

But once again, Luisa steps into her brother’s life and screws things up. She tells Petra a lie about Rafael wanting to really be with her and that she should’ve been the one to have that baby. I guess it’s true that Luisa didn’t know Petra had Rafael’s sperm. Either way, Petra had a bit to drink and got deep into her Google searches. That could never be a good thing. She gets a bit of help from room service, who provide her with a turkey baster to inseminate herself with Rafael’s sperm. A turkey baster. Really?! This woman is beyond pathetic and desperate, and possibly borderline psycho. If she does become pregnant, let’s hope the baby turns out more like Rafael.

If Petra thought she was the only one who knew she had Rafael’s sperm, she was wrong. I don’t want to know how he knew about it, but the persistent assistant Scott does, too. I can only guess that he’ll be asking for something in return for his silence.

Right as the episode is about to end, we see a mystery woman in a snowy mountain location. Her henchman hands her a laptop with an article about Jane and her baby returning home safely. She tells the man that they need to go after her now, but she says it in another language. I’m not sure who this lady is or how she’s connected to Jane, but this can’t be good.

What were your thoughts on the Season Two premiere of Jane the Virgin? What was your favorite part? Do you think Sin Rostro will pop back into the picture? Will Nadine continue to work for Sin Rostro? I hope Michael doesn’t fall into the same trap. Do you think there’s hope for Rafael and Jane or do you think she’ll try to get back with Michael? What would you do if you were in Jane’s situation and had people in your front yard thinking you were a miracle worker? Do you think Petra will become pregnant from her bizarro plan? Who do you think this mystery lady is and what does she want with Jane? Leave your thoughts in the comment section below.

Jane the Virgin airs Mondays at 9/8CT on The CW.
