5 Questions With Kyla Pratt of Freeform’s “Recovery Road”

Kyla Pratt has been an actress for most of her life. She voiced Penny Proud on Disney Channel’s The Proud Family, starred on the UPN’s One on One and in all 5 films in the Dr. Dolittle franchise, and stole every scene she was in in BET’s Let’s Stay Together. Now Pratt returns to her scene stealing ways in Freeform’s Recovery Road as recovering addict Trish Collins, roommate to the series’ central character, Maddie (played by Jessica Sula).

Pratt describes bubbly and vibrant character as “someone who had everything going right, but then got involved in the wrong stuff.” She also laughs that while Trish “is very strong-willed, she’s not as crazy as I am.” And in the above clip from scene from last week’s episode, Kyla shows that while she brings a lot of light to Trish, the actress is also capable of bringing her character to heartbreaking depths. And after Pratt gleefully answered our “5 Questions,” we gonna admit — we’re crazy for Kyla!

1. If your TV had only three shows or networks, what would you be watching?
I’m a Scandal fanatic. We have “Scandal night” at my house. Everybody has to bring a bottle of red wine— if you don’t drink red wine, you better drink before you come, because that’s what we’re having. I love Scandal and can’t miss an episode. I’m a really big fan of The Biggest Loser. It makes me say, “Kyla, you can’t be serious. You can’t go to the gym? It’s very empowering and emotional and you love to see people make it. One of my really good friends, RonReaco Lee, is on Survivor’s Remorse on Starz, and I love that show. It’s so good.

2. Tell us about a time when you were completely starstruck.
I was starstruck earlier today, when I ran into Fitz and Mellie (Tony Goldwyn and Bellamy Young) from Scandal and I froze. They started to have a conversation with me and I was like, “I don’t know what you’re saying, I love your show.” That’s literally what happened; they were talking and I was like, “I don’t know what time I got here. I enjoy your work.”

3. What was your strangest or funniest fan encounter?
It’s always funny when someone comes up to me and says, “[snaps fingers] We gonna take a picture! Come on!” And I’m like, “I’m sorry, were you asking to take a picture?” it’s always playful, but people think they know you, and then I have to stop and think, “Do I know this person?” The don’t say, “Hi” or tell me they like my work, it’s just “We gonna take a picture!”

4. You’re at magazine rack and can only pick three titles, which ones would you choose?
Oooh! that’s hard, because I used to have a magazine addiction. I would buy magazines and they would pile up on the side of my bed, and I would say, “Don’t touch my magazines!” and then it got ridiculous and I had to focus. I read a mixture: US Weekly, Essence magazine, Vibe, Ebony, W. I could never be one of those celebrities on the “Stars, they’re just like us!” page because my picture would not be that graceful. I would have forgotten to hold my stomach in!

5. If you wren’t an actor, what would you do for a living?
I would be a lawyer. I really like to argue. And I like to win. And I like justice. I’ve always been an actress, I started at a young age, but if I wasn’t in the business, I would want to be a lawyer. I feel like a lot of us don’t know our rights, don’t know the laws, and I was actually taking classes a few years ago. I might be a lawyer by the time I’m 50.
