“You’re no one until you have enemies” is the tagline for Season 2 of HBO’s Ballers, which debuts Sunday. And this time, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Spencer Strasmore and Rob Corddry’s Joe Krutel have a big one to deal with in the form of Andre, played by veteran actor Andy Garcia.
“He plays the biggest sports financial manager in Miami,” explains Corddry. “Spencer has a personal beef with him and wants to take him down. That’s basically the arc of the whole season. [But] I always had an admiration for this guy, no matter how sleazy he is. It becomes a huge thing.”

Not to mention that the additional competition comes as Spencer and Joe are trying to build the sports division of Anderson Financial from the ground up. Corddry — who just scored another run of Emmy nominations for his beloved Adult Swim series Childrens Hospital — took a break from filming his role in the upcoming feature Office Christmas Party to answer our “5 Questions.”
- What are three things you have to have in your fridge or pantry?
I need food, beverage and some kind of alcohol. Mostly wine, because beer makes me poop. I like mayonnaise. I say that at the risk of sounding controversial — but I’m on Team Mayonnaise! Hellmann’s mayonnaise! And if there is not some kind of hot sauce within arm’s reach, well then, I’m going to get some.
- What has been one of your strangest fan encounters?
There have been so many. I will tell you one that was really funny. It was while shooting Ballers Season 2. People in Miami really don’t have any filter whatsoever. One guy saw me in a CVS and he goes, “Hey man, I know you! You’re that guy.” I was like, “Hi. Yeah. Thank you.” He goes, “What’s your name again?” I said — and this is one of my many go-tos in this situation — “It’s George Clooney.” He goes, “Yeah, man! I knew it! George Clooney over here!” I walked away — and tried to condense my shopping a little. But he was a conversationalist. They all are.
- What’s a movie you can watch over and over again?
L.A. Confidential is the first one that came to mind. I think the story is so perfectly paced that it doesn’t matter where in the movie you happen to catch it. You are immediately in. Not even going to mention the performances.
- The Ballers host a lot of parties. If you could throw a party and invite any three people you want, who would they be?
My wife, my late grandmother and my father-in-law, who I never met. I would make it a get-to-know-you meet-and-greet.
- What’s the best advice you ever received?
Act all the time. Patrick Stewart told my friend Molly that when she yelled that same question to him as we were waiting outside a Broadway theater in the early 1990s after watching The Tempest. Just keep doing it. Get off your ass!
Ballers Season 2 airs Sundays at 10/9CT on HBO beginning July 17.
