As recent history demonstrates, qualifications are way overrated when it comes to winning an election.
In ABC’s The Mayor (premiering Oct. 3 at 9:30pm ET/PT), young aspiring rapper Courtney (Brandon Micheal Hall) sees running for mayor of his fictional San Francisco Bay Area town as the perfect publicity stunt to boost his music career. To his shock, Courtney wins the election and has to figure out how to handle the weight of the office’s responsibilities. Fortunately, he has help from his mom (Community’s Yvette Nicole Brown), his adviser (Glee’s Lea Michele), and his high-school buddies T.K. (Marcel Spears) and Jermaine (Bernard David Jones).
Courtney has swagger and a way with words, but he’s also got a genuine love and concern for his community, and he realizes his potential for doing good. “He’s this fish out of water who looks around in his community, sees these problems,” series creator Jeremy Bronson says. “He’s been rapping about them and writing about them for years, and now he’s in a position to actually effect some change.”
