Turner Classic Movies continues its monthlong Thursday night salute to famed British actor James Mason with this evening’s eight-film lineup of highlights from the star’s 1950s and ’60s films. Two of them feature Mason in what are among his most recognized performances: Georgy Girl, the 1966 British romantic comedy/drama that netted him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor and a Best Actress nod for Lynn Redgrave as the title character; and Lolita (1962), with Mason as Professor Humbert Humbert alongside Sue Lyon as the title character and Shelley Winters as her mother in Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of Vladimir Nabokov’s novel. Both these films air in late night/early tomorrow morning, and are bookended by Mason films that are perhaps not as known. Starting the evening and leading into Georgy Girl are the dramas Bigger Than Life (1956) and The Pumpkin Eater (1964). Following Lolita are the suspense films Cry Terror! (1958) and The Decks Ran Red (1958); the romantic comedy/fantasy Forever, Darling (1956); and the romantic drama anthology The Story of Three Loves (1953).

Thanksgiving is a time for families to put aside their differences — even the Wrights. Since the freshman dramedy’s September premiere, we’ve known perfectionist law partner Margaret Wright (Marcia Gay Harden) has three children: black sheep Todd (Skylar Astin), who now works as an investigator at her Portland, Oregon, firm (this week’s case involves a teller injured during a bank robbery); people-pleasing middle child Allison (Madeline Wise), an ER doctor whose garage Todd currently lives in; and Lawrence, who has missed every one of the family dinners that Todd has only recently been reinstated to, presumably because of a demanding job as chief of staff to the state’s governor. But this week, we finally meet the absentee sibling. As the episode opens, Margaret is upset she won’t be spending the holiday — the first since her husband left her — surrounded by all of her family. Allison plans to be with her husband and his relatives, Lawrence is tied up (again), and Todd, well, one out of three is just not enough. So Todd makes it his mission to bring Lawrence (Matthew Wilkas) home from the governor’s annual work retreat.

After two weeks in the British Isles, Turner Classic Movies heads to the European continent for this evening’s lineup of films about real and fictional royalty. Leading things off is Queen Christina (1933), a biopic about the life of the titular 17th century Swedish ruler, portrayed by Greta Garbo. Imperial Russia in the late 18th century is the setting for the next film, The Scarlet Empress (1934), which stars Marlene Dietrich as Catherine II (aka Catherine the Great), the last Empress of Russia, who came to power after overthrowing her husband, Peter III (Sam Jaffe). Staying in Russia but moving to the early 20th century, the next historical drama, 1971’s Best Picture Oscar-nominated Nicholas and Alexandra, offers an account of the last ruling monarch of that country, Tsar Nicholas II (Michael Jayston), and his wife, Tsarina Alexandra (Best Actress Oscar nominee Janet Suzman). It’s hard to pick a favorite from among the many terrific movies released in the magical Hollywood year of 1939 — considered one of Tinseltown’s greatest years ever in terms of popular releases and box office returns — but The Wizard of Oz has to be near the top of the list for most people. One of the best-loved movies of all time, this adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s novel stars Judy Garland in her iconic role as Dorothy, a young Kansas farm girl who is whisked away by a twister to the land of Oz. Accompanied by a brainless Scarecrow (Ray Bolger), a heartless Tin Man (Jack Haley) and a cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr) — and pursued by a wicked witch (Margaret Hamilton) — Dorothy and her little dog, Toto, follow the yellow brick road in search of the titular Wizard (Frank Morgan), so that he may grant her wish to return home. Over 80 years later, The Wizard of Oz is as fun as ever and still looks stunningly beautiful in both its black-and-white and its color world, and its color cinematography received an Oscar nomination. The film netted five other Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, and won for its musical score and for Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg’s classic song “Over the Rainbow.” There will be an immediate re-airing of the film after this showing, and TBS is also airing the classic Thanksgiving night (Nov. 24) and later in the day on Nov. 25.
