This is a story of Santas and personal triumphs that begins at the annual summer camp organized by the New England Santa Society, which is composed of over 100 professional Christmas performers. To try to tackle Santa’s diversity problem, the camp enlists a Black Santa named Chris from Arkansas, a disabled Santa named Fin from Vermont and a transgender Santa named Levi from Illinois. Each has a powerful Santa origin story.

Bracingly directed by Raoul Walsh, this fast-paced film noir tracing Jarrett’s violent life in and out of jail is also a harrowing character study. Jarrett is a psychological time bomb ruled by impulse — he murders a wounded accomplice and revels in the act; neglects his sultry wife (Virginia Mayo); and adores his doting mother. It is among the most vivid screen performances of Cagney’s career, and shows that when it came to portraying such characters, the actor was “top of the world!”

It’s hard to pick a favorite from among the many terrific movies released in the magical Hollywood year of 1939 — considered one of Tinseltown’s greatest years ever in terms of popular releases and box office returns — but The Wizard of Oz has to be near the top of the list for most people. One of the best-loved movies of all time, this adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s novel stars Judy Garland in her iconic role as Dorothy, a young Kansas farm girl who is whisked away by a twister to the land of Oz. Accompanied by a brainless Scarecrow (Ray Bolger), a heartless Tin Man (Jack Haley) and a cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr) — and pursued by a wicked witch (Margaret Hamilton) — Dorothy and her little dog, Toto, follow the yellow brick road in search of the titular Wizard (Frank Morgan), so that he may grant her wish to return home. Over 80 years later, The Wizard of Oz is as fun as ever and still looks stunningly beautiful in both its black-and-white and its color world, and its color cinematography received an Oscar nomination. The film netted five other Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, and won for its musical score and for Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg’s classic song “Over the Rainbow.” There will be an immediate re-airing of the film after this showing, and TBS is also airing the classic Thanksgiving night (Nov. 24) and later in the day on Nov. 25.

As this network goes operational, the team must hunt them down, one murder at a time. Original cast members reprising their roles include Joe Mantegna, A.J. If you’re looking for something to tune in to on today’s Thanksgiving holiday, but you’re not much into watching football or parades, MOVIES! and TCM are offering nice servings of classic movies that you can dip in and out of, in between your second or third helpings of turkey and pumpkin pie. Beginning early in the morning, MOVIES! presents several titles that are mostly comedies and/or musicals, with one notable classic holiday drama. The featured films are: Cheaper by the Dozen (1950), You Can’t Take It With You (1938), Auntie Mame (1958), Move Over, Darling (1963), My Favorite Wife (1940), A Christmas Carol (1951), How to Steal a Million (1966), The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer (1947), It’s a Wonderful World (1939), Nothing Sacred (1937) and March of the Wooden Soldiers (1934). TCM’s day also starts bright and early, and is divided into two parts. The first 14 hours feature seven family classics: The Jungle Book (1942), The Secret Garden (1949), Little Women (1949), The Incredible Mr. Limpet (1964), National Velvet (1944), Lassie Come Home (1943) and The Muppets Take Manhattan (1984). Starting in primetime, the network shifts to the concluding night of its monthlong Thursday salute to actor James Mason, with five of his memorable movies: Hitchcock’s fun spy thriller North by Northwest (1959), featuring the actor at his charmingly villainous best as he pursues Cary Grant across the country; A Star Is Born (1954), which earned Mason a Best Actor Oscar nomination alongside Best Actress nominee Judy Garland; Odd Man Out (1947), a film noir that was one of his last British films before he began working in Hollywood; The Prisoner of Zenda (1952); and Julius Caesar (1953), the Best Picture Oscar-nominated adaptation of Shakespeare’s tragedy/history play that also features Best Actor nominee Marlon Brando and John Gielgud.

Tied with Detroit’s as the country’s second-oldest Thanksgiving Day parade, the event has been held nearly continuously since 1924 (it was suspended between 1942-44 because of World War II), and this year marks NBC’s 70th airing of the parade as its official national broadcaster. Tonight, Turner Classic Movies marks the 70th anniversary of Cinerama, the widescreen process that used three projectors to cast motion pictures onto a giant, deeply curved screen. Cinerama was among the novel techniques developed by the movie industry at the time to keep audiences coming to theaters in the face of increasing competition from television. Starting with its initial title, This Is Cinerama, which debuted Sept. 30, 1952, Cinerama’s first decade of usage produced travelogues and documentaries. Only two films with stories were produced using the original, three-strip Cinerama process, and both of those will be airing on TCM this evening. While even the best of modern TVs cannot replicate the full Cinerama experience, it is easy to see why these epic productions were chosen to be presented in that immersive manner. Up first is The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm (1962), producer/codirector George Pal’s film that combines biography and fantasy to tell the story of Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm (Laurence Harvey and Karlheinz Böhm) interspersed with fanciful presentations of some of the classic fairy tales the siblings collected. Following this is the TCM premiere of the 2021 documentary short Rescuing a Fantasy Classic, which details the daunting technical effort that went into restoring Brothers Grimm in its original Cinerama format. After that is the second and last story-based feature to have been produced in the three-strip Cinerama format, also from 1962 — How the West Was Won. Boasting three directors — Henry Hathaway, John Ford and George Marshall — and a large cast including John Wayne, Henry Fonda, James Stewart, Gregory Peck, Debbie Reynolds, Karl Malden, Spencer Tracy and more, this Best Picture Oscar-nominated film tells the story of America’s westward expansion through five stories set between 1839 and 1889.
