Quiet about his agenda, Macreedy is received with suspicion by the unusually jumpy locals, and when his few innocuous questions begin to scrape away at the town’s shared, dark secret, he may not live to catch the train out. The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms
TCM, 12:15pm
Catch a Classic!
One of the seminal giant monster movies of the early Atomic Age, and an influence on subsequent classics like Them! and Godzilla, this enjoyable 1953 creature-feature expands Ray Bradbury’s short story “The Fog Horn” into a tale of a dinosaur (a fictional “Rhedosaurus” invented by the filmmakers) awakened from its long Arctic hibernation by atomic testing. In a search for others like itself, the gigantic creature is impelled by primal instincts to make its way through the North Atlantic toward what used to be its ancestral breeding grounds millions of years ago, but what now happens to be, unfortunately, New York City. This production was the first on which legendary SFX artist Ray Harryhausen was in full charge of the technical effects, and the first on which he used his famed “Dynamation” stop-motion technique that effectively allowed models of fantastic creatures to seemingly interact with real-world footage. Harryhausen’s Rhedosaurus is as impressive as any of his later creations, and his animations of the creature simultaneously lend it not only a terrible ferocity, but also a bit of the pathos found in Bradbury’s tale, as the awakened beast rampages alone through an unfamiliar world.

Star of the Month: Marion Davies
TCM, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!
Turner Classic Movies’ monthlong Tuesday night celebration of iconic actress Marion Davies continues tonight with six more of her films, titles that straddle her later silent movie career and the beginnings of her work in the age of “talkies” in the late 1920s/early ’30s. While that latter time also marked the beginnings of Davies’ decline in popularity compared to her earlier heights of stardom, she still turned in impressive performances, as you can see in this evening’s films. Up first is The Patsy (1928), a silent comedy/drama that was the first of three collaborations between Davies and director King Vidor. It costars Marie Dressler, another top female star of early Hollywood. Also in 1928, Davies and Vidor teamed for the next film, the silent comedy Show People. Costarring William Haines, this production also features cameos from other top film personalities of the day, including Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks, William S. Hart and John Gilbert, with Vidor also appearing as himself. Following that is Marianne (1929), a romantic drama set during World War I. Interestingly, silent and sound versions of this film were produced in the same year, with Davies headlining both alongside different supporting casts; TCM is airing the sound version costarring Lawrence Gray as the American soldier with whom Davies’ titular French farm girl falls in love. The final three films in this lineup are also early sound productions: the 1930 drama The Florodora Girl, again costarring Gray; Not So Dumb, another 1930 comedy that was Davies’ final collaboration with Vidor; and the Best Picture Oscar-nominated The Hollywood Revue (1929), which was MGM’s second feature-length musical and features many of the studio’s stars appearing as themselves, including Davies, who sings “Oh, What a Man” and “Tommy Atkins on Parade” in a military march segment.

TCM, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!
Put on your seat belt, because Turner Classic Movies is putting the pedal to the metal with another lineup in its monthlong Wednesday night salute to films with great car chases. It leads off with Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry, a 1974 crime drama in which Peter Fonda and Adam Roarke play Larry and Deke, NASCAR hopefuls who are pursued by cops following a heist. Eventually accompanied by Mary (Susan George), Larry’s one-night stand, they leave their souped-up Chevrolet Impala behind for a Dodge Charger R/T 440, which for a time allows them to evade even the police force’s special high-performance Dodge Polara interceptor. Following that is Smokey and the Bandit (1977), which finds Burt Reynolds’ Bandit driving a Pontiac Trans Am as a blocker for a truck illegally transporting 400 cases of Coors from Texarkana to Atlanta, trying to stay ahead of pursuing “smokeys” like Sheriff Buford T. Justice (Jackie Gleason). Next up is The French Connection (1971) and its legendary car chase that is often cited as one of the greatest ever filmed. It finds Gene Hackman’s police detective Popeye Doyle commandeering a civilian’s Pontiac LeMans for a frantic pursuit of an elevated train on which a hitman is trying to escape, with creative camerawork enhancing the thrills and sensation of speeding through the streets of a densely crowded big-city borough. This scene involved stunt driver Bill Hickman, who also featured in not only the famous chase scene in 1968’s Bullitt, but also the one in tonight’s final film, the cop thriller The Seven-Ups (1973). Here, Hickman plays one of the killers who is pursued through the streets of New York in a Pontiac Grand Ville by Roy Scheider’s Detective Buddy Manucci (via a stunt driver), driving a Pontiac Ventura.

Catch a Classic!
James Cagney, who became a star nearly 20 years earlier with a legendary breakthrough performance in another memorable crime flick, The Public Enemy, gives an equally iconic turn in this Oscar-nominated 1949 gangster classic as coldblooded Cody Jarrett, a psychotic thug devoted to his hardboiled Ma (Margaret Wycherly). Bracingly directed by Raoul Walsh, this fast-paced film noir tracing Jarrett’s violent life in and out of jail is also a harrowing character study. Jarrett is a psychological time bomb ruled by impulse — he murders a wounded accomplice and revels in the act; neglects his sultry wife (Virginia Mayo); and adores his doting mother. It is among the most vivid screen performances of Cagney’s career, and shows that when it came to portraying such characters, the actor was “top of the world!”
