Awards season culminates with Hollywood’s biggest night as the Academy Awards honor the best films of 2022. Leading the field is Everything Everywhere All at Once, with 11 nominations, followed by All Quiet on the Western Front and The Banshees of Inisherin with nine nods each, Elvis with eight and The Fabelmans with seven. Among notable nominees, Michelle Yeoh is the first Malaysian nominated as Best Actress (Everything Everywhere All at Once); Best Supporting Actress nominee Angela Bassett (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) is the first actor in a Marvel movie to be nominated for an Oscar; and Best Original Score nominee John Williams (The Fabelmans) adds to his reign as the Oscars’ most-nominated living person (he’s now at 53). Jimmy Kimmel returns to host the ceremony. Rihanna has been announced as a performer; she will sing the Oscar-nominated “Lift Me Up” from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Also announced as performers are Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava, who will sing the Oscar-nominated “Naatu Naatu” from the Indian action drama RRR. Presenters announced at presstime include Riz Ahmed, Emily Blunt, Glenn Close, Jennifer Connelly, Ariana DeBose, Samuel L. Jackson, Dwayne Johnson, Michael B. Epic war films have frequently been favorites when it comes to Academy voters, and Turner Classic Movies’ 31 Days of Oscar has 10 of them in today’s lineup. Jussie Smollett: Anatomy of a Hoax

This new five-part docuseries will feature the first time ever exclusive interviews with brothers Abimbola and Olabinjo Osundairo, who were part of an elaborate plot to perpetrate a staged hate crime on actor Jussie Smollett but have never spoken to the media about their role in the hoax. In January 2019, Smollett claimed to have been attacked on a Chicago street by two men who were said to have shouted “this is MAGA country” while beating and putting a noose around his neck. After a thorough investigation, Chicago police uncovered that the attack was staged, and that Smollett had hired the Osundairo brothers to carry out the crime. Now, on the eve of Smollett’s appeal, “Jussie Smollett: Anatomy of a Hoax” will chronicle the behind the scenes maneuvering and drama that turned the star into a pariah and sent shockwaves through Chicago and beyond, leaving a trail of damaged careers and reputations. The Osundairo brothers will unravel the details from the planning of the fake crime, its execution and all that ensued in the aftermath.

A long, spectacularly epic movie production always seems likely to get at least some attention when it comes time for the Academy Awards, and the three films airing tonight during Turner Classic Movies’ 31 Days of Oscar are good examples of that. The evening begins with Spartacus (1960), which runs nearly three and a half hours and was nominated for six Oscars, winning four, including Best Supporting Actor (Peter Ustinov). Next, clocking in at nearly four hours, is Ben-Hur (1959), which won a whopping 11 of the 12 Academy Awards for which it was nominated, including Best Picture, Actor (Charlton Heston), Supporting Actor (Hugh Griffith) and Director (William Wyler). Ben-Hur reigned alone for decades as the movie with the most Oscar wins ever until it was eventually matched by 1997’s Titanic and 2003’s The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Tonight’s final acclaimed epic feels like a quick watch next to the first two: Quo Vadis (1951), which runs just a bit under three hours. It was nominated for eight Oscars, including Best Picture and two Supporting Actor nods (Ustinov and Leo Genn).

Detectives were going through the list of potential suspects, eliminating them through alibis and inconsistencies, until finally they showed up at a house of Sean Vincent Gillis.
