After this levity, the film lineup turns serious as it kicks off with the Best Picture Oscar-nominated All the President’s Men (1976), the Robert Redford/Dustin Hoffman-led political thriller based on investigations into the Watergate scandal. Following that is the legendary 1973 chiller The Exorcist, another Best Picture nominee, helmed by Best Director nominee William Friedkin and starring Ellen Burstyn, Linda Blair and Jason Miller, all of whom received Oscar nods for their work. The night continues with Scarecrow (1973), a road movie starring Gene Hackman and Al Pacino; Badlands (1973), Terrence Malick’s neo-noir crime drama starring Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek; and Night Moves (1975), Arthur Penn’s very bleak but terrific neo-noir mystery starring Hackman as a private investigator.

Warner Bros. 100th Anniversary: The Superhero Era Begins
TCM, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!

Marvel may rule the big-screen superhero game nowadays, but in the late 1970s and ’80s, when the modern form of the comic book feature film was being introduced, it was DC Comics — which is under the Warner umbrella — that dominated the box office. That came largely through the two Warner Bros. blockbusters, starring DC’s two most popular characters, that are airing tonight as part of Turner Classic Movies’ monthlong celebration of the studio’s centennial. Up first, though, there is a cartoon: director Chuck Jones’ classic 1953 Merrie Melodies animated short Duck Dodgers in the 24 1/2th Century, starring Daffy Duck, Porky Pig and Marvin the Martian. Then, the evening’s comic book-themed double feature takes off with Superman (1978), in which Christopher Reeve cemented himself as the quintessential big-screen Man of Steel. Several elements of the film — Reeve’s interplay with Margot Kidder as Lois Lane, director Richard Donner’s deft ability to re-create the colorful feel of a comic book without descending into camp, visual effects that earned a Special Achievement Oscar and followed through on the film’s tag line that “You’ll believe a man can fly,” and John Williams’ rousing, Oscar-nominated musical score — combine to give this production an enduring magic that subsequent Superman films have not been able to duplicate. Following that is Tim Burton’s 1989 blockbuster Batman. Just as Superman has forever linked Reeve with his screen character in the minds of many, so, too, did this film make Michael Keaton the favorite big-screen Batman/Bruce Wayne to a lot of people, as unlikely as that might have seemed before the film was released. Likewise, Jack Nicholson’s brilliantly crazed and iconic performance as Jack Napier/Joker has cast a long shadow over other actors who have since portrayed that legendary supervillain.

Where Eagles Dare

The mission is clear: Get in, get the general, get out. Commandos charged with freeing a U.S. general from a Nazi fortress high in the Alps should also be told to trust nothing — including the search-and-rescue orders just issued. Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood lead this 1968 World War II action thriller classic written by Alistair MacLean (The Guns of Navarone, Ice Station Zebra), who adapted his 1966 novel of the same name, and directed by Brian G. Hutton (Kelly’s Heroes). Previously best known for fiery dramatic roles, Burton ventures into the realm of movie pyrotechnics here with dynamic efficiency, while Eastwood’s cool-under-fire presence heightens one searing action sequence after another (the film became Eastwood’s then-biggest hit). If the film looks and feels more above average than a typical action film, it’s because some of the top filmmakers of the period were involved in its production, notably legendary stuntman Yakima Canutt, who was second-unit director and shot most of the nail-biting action sequences.
