Starring Lizzy Caplan and Joshua Jackson, this reimagining of the Oscar-nominated 1987 thriller of the same name will take a slightly different approach to its source material, with plenty of Easter eggs to please fans of the original (including an appearance or two from a little white bunny!).
Going back and forth between lawyer Dan Gallagher’s tragic affair with Alex Forrest to his release from prison for her murder 15 years later, the focus is more on rebuilding his relationship with his daughter (Alyssa Jirrels), who is now a college student, and clearing his name. The dialogue is fantastic, and viewers will get better insight into the mind of Alex Forrest and exactly how her obsession turned so deadly, though the series diverts drastically from the film in terms of plot. The best parts are the scenes in the present, when viewers can witness the transformation of the once-arrogant and domineering Dan Gallagher after everything in his life has been taken away, and the small steps he takes towards redemption and forgiveness.
Amanda Peet shines as his ex-wife, who has since remarried but still believes in his innocence, and Toby Huss is by far the most entertaining as Dan’s best friend Mike, who is both captivatingly honest as well as the comic relief. With Gallagher’s grown daughter being a psychology student, thematic elements of the show are highlighted in a very unique way, proving to be more about the complexity of all relationships rather than a story of a tumultuous affair and its horrific consequences.
Fatal Attraction premieres Sunday, April 30 on Paramount+.
