The mission is clear: Get in, get the general, get out. Commandos charged with freeing a U.S. general from a Nazi fortress high in the Alps should also be told to trust nothing — including the search-and-rescue orders just issued. Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood lead this 1968 World War II action thriller classic written by Alistair MacLean (The Guns of Navarone, Ice Station Zebra), who adapted his 1966 novel of the same name, and directed by Brian G. Hutton (Kelly’s Heroes). Previously best known for fiery dramatic roles, Burton ventures into the realm of movie pyrotechnics here with dynamic efficiency, while Eastwood’s cool-under-fire presence heightens one searing action sequence after another (the film became Eastwood’s then-biggest hit). If the film looks and feels more above average than a typical action film, it’s because some of the top filmmakers of the period were involved in its production, notably legendary stuntman Yakima Canutt, who was second-unit director and shot most of the nail-biting action sequences.

Two of the films Joan Crawford made later in her career, following her appearance alongside Bette Davis in 1962’s What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? — and when there was a sort of trend in casting middle-aged actresses in similarly campy/horrific films — are on today’s MOVIES! lineup. First is Berserk! (1967), which was the star’s second-to-last feature film. The horror thriller finds Crawford playing a circus owner whose authority is challenged when a killer targets her show. Following that is Strait-Jacket (1964), a psychological thriller in which Crawford plays a woman who, after 20 years in an asylum following the double murder of her husband and his lover with an ax, is released, only to find herself a suspect in a new series of ax murders.

For the month of May, Turner Classic Movies is devoting Monday nights to legendary Chinese cinematographer James Wong Howe, who was known for his innovative filmmaking techniques and worked on over 130 films during the span of his long, successful career. First up is Laugh, Clown, Laugh (1928), about a clown and a count who become romantic rivals in pursuit of a teenage circus performer. Following that is the Lionel Barrymore-led tale of a mysterious murder some believe was done by a vampire, Mark of the Vampire (1935). In Oscar-nominated The Prisoner of Zenda (1937), an Englishman on holiday must impersonate the king when his distant cousin, the rightful heir, is drugged and kidnapped. Finally, the Oscar-nominated mystery Algiers (1938) follows a thief who has escaped France and gone into hiding in Algiers. Nearly a dozen more Howe films, such as The Oklahoma Kid (1939), Dust Be My Destiny (1939) and The Strawberry Blonde (1941), continue into the following evening.

This eight-episode historical drama, which will air the following day on Disney+ and also features the great Liev Schreiber as Otto Frank, is one you’ll definitely want to watch.

Legendary star William Powell is remembered each Wednesday night this month with lineups of great titles (often running well into the next day) that range from his first screen performances to his final ones. It begins tonight, and runs into early tomorrow afternoon, with 12 films from the actor’s early work, spanning the silent era and into the early days of sound pictures. Leading things off is the 1932 romantic comedy/heist film Jewel Robbery, in which Powell plays a suave thief alongside Kay Francis as a baroness bored with her husband (“He stole her jewels — but that wasn’t all!” exclaimed the promotional poster for the movie). A few other titles of note in this extensive lineup: Manhattan Melodrama (1934), a crime drama also starring Clark Gable and Myrna Loy, with whom Powell would soon after begin famously costarring in the Thin Man films (you’ll see all of those next Wednesday); One Way Passage, another 1932 romantic pairing of Powell and Francis; Evelyn Prentice, another 1934 crime movie that pairs Powell and Loy, and also features Rosalind Russell in her film debut; and Powell’s second feature film, the Marion Davies-led silent classic When Knighthood Was in Flower (1922), in which he portrays French King Francis I.

As crazy as the weather may have been lately in some places around the country, it pales in comparison with the cinematic climatic conditions that are often played up for dramatic effect, thanks to visual effects. Each Thursday night this month, Turner Classic Movies will devote an evening/early morning lineup to films that use various types of weather as key elements of their stories. This evening, and next Thursday, will be devoted to movies using perhaps the most awe-inspiring, frightening and potentially destructive of all types of weather: storms. The lineup begins with young Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland) getting swept up by perhaps the most famous tornado in screen history (“It’s a twister! It’s a twister!”) in The Wizard of Oz (1939). After that, Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall and Lionel Barrymore find themselves stuck in a hotel on Key Largo (1948) along with gangsters led by Edward G. Robinson when a hurricane rolls in. That kind of storm obviously features in the next title, The Hurricane (1937), a South Seas-set drama that culminates in a thrilling special effects-generated storm. That film was helmed by John Ford, who won an Oscar for directing the next film: 1940’s The Grapes of Wrath, set amid the devastating wind/dust storms of the 1930s Great Plains Dust Bowl. The lineup concludes early tomorrow with The Last Wave (1977) and Stalker (1979).
