Hey, Pilgrim, are you ready for nearly 12 hours of John Wayne classics? Well, you’ll get them today during this four-film lineup on MOVIES! (moviestvnetwork.com) that features three Westerns (well, one is technically more of a “Northern”) and one war film. First up is North to Alaska (1960), which costars a pretty intriguing mix of cast members including Stewart Granger, comedian Ernie Kovacs, singer/actor Fabian and French fashion model/actress Capucine. Following that is The Undefeated (1969), which also features Rock Hudson and Lee Meriwether, and is set amid events of both the American Civil War and France’s second intervention in Mexico. Next, The Comancheros (1961), costarring Stuart Whitman and Lee Marvin, was the final film for legendary director Michael Curtiz, who died of cancer shortly after the film was completed (Wayne took over the directing in an uncredited capacity when Curtiz became too ill to finish). Finally, the Best Picture Oscar-nominated The Longest Day (1962), an epic dramatization of the D-Day invasion, has Wayne leading a large and varied international cast that also includes Henry Fonda, Robert Mitchum, Robert Ryan, Eddie Albert, Mel Ferrer, Rod Steiger, Jeffrey Hunter, Paul Anka, Robert Wagner, Sal Mineo, Peter Lawford, Richard Burton, Richard Dawson, and future Bond movie villains Curd Jürgens, Gert Fröbe and Walter Gotell.

Tonight’s movies airing as part of Turner Classic Movies’ monthlong Wednesday night salute to legendary actor William Powell show the star at the mid-to-late-1930s height of his stardom, and delivering some of his finest work, beginning with his Best Actor Oscar-nominated performance alongside Best Actress nominee Carole Lombard in the screwball comedy classic My Man Godfrey (1936). After that, Powell portrays famed theatrical impresario Florenz “Flo” Ziegfeld Jr. in the Best Picture Oscar-winning musical drama The Great Ziegfeld (1936), which offers a fictionalized tribute to the man and lovingly re-creates some of Broadway’s famed Ziegfeld Follies. Powell’s frequent Thin Man costar Myrna Loy costars here as Billie Burke, and Luise Rainer gives a Best Actress-winning performance as Anna Held. That nearly three-hour film takes the lineup into early tomorrow morning, where it continues with The Ex-Mrs. Bradford (1936), a Thin Man-like comedy/mystery that pairs Powell with Jean Arthur. Seven more films follow, among them the Best Picture-nominated comedy Libeled Lady (1936), in which Powell costarred with Jean Harlow, his real-life partner at the time.

If you enjoyed getting a snow day off of school as a kid, you might get a similar thrill cozying up to tonight’s five films airing as part of Turner Classic Movies’ monthlong Thursday night salute to films that famously use various types of weather in their stories. The forecast is cold and snowy this evening, and the flakes begin falling with The Gold Rush (1925), writer/director/star Charles Chaplin’s silent comedy classic that begins with Chaplin’s Little Tramp character getting lost in a blizzard while prospecting during the Klondike gold rush. Following that is the epic, Best Picture Oscar-nominated romantic drama Doctor Zhivago (1965); while filled with spectacular scenes, the film’s dreamlike sequence with Omar Sharif and Julie Christie in the icebound dacha seems to stick with many viewers of the film, and it can make you feel cold even in the comfort of your own home. Continuing into early tomorrow, the flurry of snowy movies begins tapering off with Robert Altman’s revisionist Western starring Best Actress nominee Christie and Warren Beatty, McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971), whose climax was shot during a genuine heavy snowfall in the Pacific Northwest; the charming holiday comedy Christmas in Connecticut (1945), which places Barbara Stanwyck and Dennis Morgan in a postcard-perfect New England winter setting; and the Rock Hudson-led, Arctic-set spy thriller Ice Station Zebra (1968), whose title alone gives off a promise of the chilly conditions to come.

Director Robert Mulligan’s 1972 adaptation of Thomas Tryon’s novel is one of the more unnerving big-screen examples of the “creepy kid” genre of psychological thriller, and with its use of superstition and a bit of the supernatural, combined with its dark themes set amid a pastoral setting, it could also fall into the “folk horror” category. Set in rural Connecticut in the 1930s, the film follows identical twin brothers Niles and Holland Perry (played by real-life twins Chris and Martin Udvarnoky), who live on their family’s farm. Like most 12-year-olds, Niles and Holland occasionally get into mischief; the only trouble is that when Holland gets into mischief, people tend to “accidentally” die. Niles is the only one who knows that Holland is the “evil twin” responsible for the gruesome misfortunes suddenly befalling the area over one summer … or is he? Uta Hagen, Diana Muldaur, Norma Connolly, Victor French, Lou Frizzell and John Ritter in an early role also headline the cast of this little remembered, slow-burning creeper.

After taking on Hollywood Westerns in 1974’s Blazing Saddles, classic monster movies in 1975’s Young Frankenstein and the silent film era in 1976’s Silent Movie, cowriter/director Mel Brooks turned his satiric eye toward Alfred Hitchcock thrillers in this hilarious 1977 spoof. Starring in a speaking lead role for the first time, Brooks plays a psychiatrist with a very Hitchcockian name — Dr. Richard Thorndyke — who suffers from the titular nervous condition, a combination of acrophobia and vertigo. Speaking of vertigo, Hitchcock’s classic film Vertigo is just one of the Master of Suspense’s films that are uproariously parodied here — you can also keep an eye out for straight-out spoofs of scenes from The Birds, Psycho and Spellbound. Beyond these specific callouts, Brooks also lovingly, and painstakingly, re-creates the overall look and style of Hitch’s films, from the directorial choices to color schemes. That aspect makes this film particularly enjoyable for students of Hitchcock’s work, and perhaps a little more niche than something like Blazing Saddles, but no less funny. Joining Brooks onscreen here, and as great as ever, are his frequent collaborators Harvey Korman, Cloris Leachman and Madeline Kahn.
