Rancho Notorious
TCM, 12pm
Catch a Classic!

With this 1952 feature, his third and final Western, famed director Fritz Lang unsaddles the genre to create a tempestuous cult favorite that swaps the expansive exteriors one might expect in a film of that type for roiling psychological interiors in a story set at a lawless, remote Wild West outpost called the Chuck-a-Luck. There, bandits, gunslingers, thieves and the like know that — in exchange for a 10% cut of any loot — former barroom belle Altar Keane (Marlene Dietrich) serves as a den mother of sorts, and hides them or keeps them safe. Among the newcomers at this hive of villainy is Vern Haskell (Arthur Kennedy), who poses as an outlaw in hopes of smoking out the desperado who killed his fiancée. Critics have since likened Rancho Notorious and its theme of a man twisted by vengeance to Lang films of wholly different genres, the crime and films noir for which the director was more known, like M and The Big Heat, and it’s certainly one of the more unique Westerns you’ll see.

A Hard Day’s Night
TCM, 2:15pm
Catch a Classic!

This 1964 classic starring the Beatles was the Fab Four’s first film and is a fun and influential romp through a fictionalized day in their life during the frenzied height of Beatlemania, and earned Oscar nominations for its screenplay and its adapted musical score by the group’s producer, George Martin. Directed by Richard Lester, the film is a perfect vehicle for John, Paul, George and Ringo, drawing on the cheeky humor and pure fun the group often brought to its songs. The first megastar boy band at the time of filming — and still quite young — the Beatles are comfortably charming in the movie, even while frequently pursued by obsessed fans. The film’s other big star is its fantastic soundtrack, including the title tune and other classics like “Can’t Buy Me Love,” “She Loves You,” “And I Love Her” and “If I Fell.” The innovative way these songs are cut into visual sequences surely had some influence on later music videos. With A Hard Day’s Night and its frantically fun combination of songs and comedy, the Beatles — as they did with their records — set a new and high bar for what a music film could be. And, whether meaning to or not, they and Lester also created an enduringly enjoyable time capsule of one particularly fab moment in time. — Jeff Pfeiffer

Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist & The Exorcist III
MOVIES!, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!

With the classic 1973 chiller The Exorcist turning 50 later this year, and a new direct sequel to it being released in October, it’s a good time to revisit a couple of other entries in that horror franchise, and you can do so during the Friday Night Frights lineup on MOVIES! this evening. Up first is 2005’s Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist. This film’s history is a bit confusing; it had been completed by director Paul Schrader before being retooled by the studio into Exorcist: The Beginning, under the hand of director Renny Harlin. That was released in 2004 and not very well received. Dominion was then released, and while it only gained marginally better reviews, that might be because it was tainted by memories of The Beginning, which really isn’t too good. This one is a bit more understated in its horror and exploration of evil, and Stellan Skarsgård is especially impressive as a younger version of Father Merrin, Max von Sydow’s character in the original Exorcist, in a story that takes place nearly 30 years before the events of that film. Following Dominion is The Exorcist III, a 1990 film written and directed by William Peter Blatty, author of the novel The Exorcist, who based this movie on his 1983 book Legion. George C. Scott leads the cast as a police detective investigating a series of murders that ultimately seem connected to the demon that originally possessed young Regan in the first movie. Jason Miller reprises his role as Damien Karras from The Exorcist. The film is an interesting entry in the franchise, and is certainly better than 1977’s Exorcist II: The Heretic (the events of which this production ignores). Blatty does maintain an effectively eerie atmosphere throughout Exorcist III, which also boasts one of the greatest jump-scares in movie history; even if you’ve seen it and know when it’s coming, it can still get you.
