Paul Newman gives one of the defining performances of his career, and cemented his place as a beautiful-rebel screen icon, with his Best Actor Oscar-nominated role as stubbornly tough and independent Lucas “Luke” Jackson in this famed 1967 prison drama. George Kennedy took home a Best Supporting Actor Oscar as Dragline, the brutal chain-gang boss who tries to beat loner Luke’s cool out of him in this film’s classic rebel-against-the-repressive-institution story. The movie is filled with iconic moments like the hard-boiled-egg-eating contest, and lines like Strother Martin’s sadistic prison officer, the “Captain,” stating, “What we’ve got here is failure to communicate.” Cool Hand Luke certainly does not fail to communicate its message, or to entertain, after nearly 60 years.

Beloved actress Natalie Wood would have turned 85 today. She died tragically young when she drowned in 1981, at the age of 43, but still left an astonishing legacy behind. Wood was a teenager when she was nominated for her first Academy Award, for Best Supporting Actress in Rebel Without a Cause (1955), in which she costarred with James Dean. That classic airs later this afternoon as part of today’s Turner Classic Movies marathon, which remembers the legend with several of her films. The full lineup, in order, features Cash McCall (1960), a romantic drama costarring James Garner; the comedic caper film Penelope (1966); Inside Daisy Clover (1965), a drama also with Christopher Plummer; Rebel Without a Cause; Splendor in the Grass (1961), a period drama costarring Warren Beatty, and in which Wood earned her first Best Actress nomination; and the musical Gypsy (1962), also with Rosalind Russell and Karl Malden.
