Back-to-back hourlong episodes air tonight. “Mass Appeal” shows how the 1990s was the decade of the craze — from the Beanie Babies frenzy to Harry Potter changing the literary landscape — and the last hurrah of mass culture before the internet changed everything. Then, “What Is Love?” shows how the decade redefined love, whether it was the bromance between Beavis and Butt-Head, children and their pocket-sized electronic pets, or a little blue pill that provided millions with a new lease on their sex lives.

English-American actress Eileen Evelyn Greer Garson was nominated for seven Best Actress Oscars over the course of her nearly 50-year big-screen career. Six of those nods, and her one win, came very early in her career and in rapid succession. She received her first nomination in her first feature film, Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1939), which is part of today’s Summer Under the Stars salute to Garson. Also featured in the 12-title lineup are four of the five films for which Garson received the Best Actress nomination during five consecutive years, tying Bette Davis for that achievement: Blossoms in the Dust (1941), Mrs. Miniver (1942), for which she won, Mrs. Parkington (1944) and The Valley of Decision (1945). (She was also nominated for 1943’s Madame Curie, which is not on the schedule.)

Victor Conte’s name is synonymous with the biggest sports doping scandal ever, which ensnared top athletes like Barry Bonds, Marion Jones and Tim Montgomery. For 16 years, Conte swore that BALCO Laboratories, his supplement and nutrition company, never dabbled in illegal, performance-enhancing drugs. But by 2000, he had gone to the dark side and became the go-to guy for athletes in search of steroids, fame and world records. This film features interviews with several of Conte’s notable former associates to delve deeper into the story.

Oscar-winning British actor Ronald Colman is the subject of today’s lineup, and TCM will be featuring many of his films throughout the day, including My Life With Caroline (1941), a romantic comedy about a married woman who falls in love with someone else while on vacation with her father; the 1935 adaptation of the classic Charles Dickens novel A Tale of Two Cities, following a former French aristocrat and an alcoholic English lawyer who fall in love with the same woman during the French Revolution; Random Harvest (1942), a romantic drama about an amnesiac war veteran who falls in love with a music star but then has his memories restored after an accident and forgets his new ones; and Kismet (1944), an Aladdin-esque fantasy film set in ancient Baghdad about a beggar who falls in love with royalty.

New to the Summer Under the Stars lineup is Mexico-born actress Katy Jurado, who began her acting career during the golden age of Mexican cinema. Recruited to Hollywood by American filmmakers, she was featured in many popular Westerns of the 1950s and ’60s and was the first Latin American actress to win a Golden Globe. A selection of her films, many of them Westerns, will be the subject of today’s lineup, including Man From Del Rio (1956), which follows a gunman who is hired to replace a sheriff after killing a few notorious outlaws and is forced to change his ways; High Noon (1952), the Oscar-winning film also starring Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly about a town marshal who must face a gang of deadly killers when their leader arrives on the noon train; Arrowhead (1953), costarring Charlton Heston, about a man attempting to make peace between the U.S. Army and the Native population near Fort Clark, Texas; and Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (1973), about a man hired to bring down his old friend Billy the Kid, played by Kris Kristofferson.

We’ll always be thankful to comedian/actor Leslie Townes “Bob” Hope for the roughly 80 years of memories he provided. Born in England, Hope moved with his family to the United States at age 4 and rose to become an icon of American entertainment, performing onstage in the 1920s, then on radio and in films starting in the ’30s. His most memorable movie appearances were alongside Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour in the Road to … comedies. Five of those beloved features can be seen during today’s Summer Under the Stars salute to Hope: Road to Singapore (1940), Road to Zanzibar (1941), Road to Morocco (1942), Road to Utopia (1946) and Road to Bali (1953). Jane Alice Peters — better known as legendary actress Carole Lombard — had an all-too-short life, dying in a plane crash in 1942 at age 33. But she still managed, over a career that encompassed 21 years, 56 feature films and numerous shorts, to become one of the iconic stars of Hollywood’s golden age. She is most beloved for and identified with the screwball comedy genre starting in the mid 1930s, thanks to her brilliant performances in classics like My Man Godfrey (1936), for which she earned a Best Actress Oscar nomination, Twentieth Century (1934), Nothing Sacred (1937), Fools for Scandal (1938), Mr. & Mrs. Smith (1941) and To Be or Not to Be (1942), her final film. Fred Astaire’s birth name of “Frederick Austerlitz” may not have flowed as smoothly off fans’ lips had he kept it when he began wowing audiences with his big-screen singing and dancing, but his legendary moves still would have been as memorable — especially those he displayed with his most famous dance partner, Ginger Rogers, in musicals like Top Hat (1935), Shall We Dance (1937) and Carefree (1938), all of which can be seen during today’s Summer Under the Stars salute to Astaire.
