The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms
MOVIES!, 4:25pm
Catch a Classic!

One of the seminal giant monster movies of the early Atomic Age, and an influence on subsequent classics like Them! and Godzilla, this enjoyable 1953 creature-feature expands Ray Bradbury’s short story “The Fog Horn” into a tale of a dinosaur (a fictional “Rhedosaurus” invented by the filmmakers) awakened from its long Arctic hibernation by atomic testing. In a search for others like itself, the gigantic creature is impelled by primal instincts to make its way through the North Atlantic toward what used to be its ancestral breeding grounds millions of years ago, but what now happens to be, unfortunately, New York City. This production was the first on which legendary SFX artist Ray Harryhausen was in full charge of the technical effects, and the first on which he used his famed “Dynamation” stop-motion technique that effectively allowed models of fantastic creatures to seemingly interact with real-world footage. Harryhausen’s Rhedosaurus is as impressive as any of his later creations, and his animations of the creature simultaneously lend it not only a terrible ferocity, but also a bit of the pathos found in Bradbury’s tale, as the awakened beast rampages alone through an unfamiliar world. The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms airs third in a lineup of cool, if sometimes cheesy, ’50s/early ’60s giant creature features airing this afternoon and into early tomorrow morning on MOVIES! Ahead of it in the lineup are Earth vs. the Spider (1958) and Them! (1954). Following Beast are Godzilla, King of the Monsters! (1956), It Came From Beneath the Sea (1955), The Lost World (1960), The Giant Gila Monster (1959), Attack of the Giant Leeches (1959) and War of the Colossal Beast (1958).

Creepy Cinema: “Mad, Mad Mitchum” & “’70s Horror”
TCM, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!

In tonight’s first two films airing as part of Turner Classic Movies’ monthlong Tuesday night Creepy Cinema block, you’ll see legendary actor Robert Mitchum starring in two of his most memorably evil roles, which rank among the greatest villain portrayals in screen history and should have both gotten him at least Oscar nods. First, in the suspenseful noir thriller Cape Fear (1962), Mitchum plays Max Cady, a convicted rapist who, upon his release from prison, proceeds to stalk the lawyer (Gregory Peck) who helped put him away, and the man’s family. As compelling as Mitchum’s performance is as Cady, he went even deeper and creepier into his villainous role in the next film, The Night of the Hunter (1955). Here he plays Reverend Harry Powell, who marries a widow (Shelley Winters) and ultimately kills her then pursues and torments her children, who know where their real dad has hidden the $10,000 in stolen money Powell desires. Starting later in the evening and into tomorrow morning, the theme shifts to four fright flicks from the early 1970s: From Beyond the Grave (1974), led by Peter Cushing and the last of the notable horror anthology movies produced by Britain’s Amicus Productions around that time; Blacula (1972), which stars William Marshall as the title vampire and is one of the earliest and better of the horror-themed movies to come out within this era’s wave of “blaxploitation” titles; House of Dark Shadows (1970), directed by Dan Curtis and based on Curtis’ gothic soap opera Dark Shadows; and The Night Digger (1971), a British thriller starring Patricia Neal and with a screenplay by Roald Dahl.

Goosebumps
Disney+ & Hulu
New Series!

R.L. Stine’s iconic ’90s horror books for kids are getting a tune-up in this 10-episode series, which follows a group of five teens as they uncover maddening mysteries in their small Pacific Northwest town. The first five episodes are available today; new episodes drop on Fridays. In the first hour, based in part on Stine’s 1992 novel Say Cheese and Die!, football star Isaiah (EastEnders’ Zack Morris) unearths a haunted Polaroid camera during a Halloween party, and “bad things start happening,” warns exec producer Conor Welch. “The final photo is of him hurt at the end of a game, so he spends the episode trying to make sure that doesn’t happen.” That’s only the scary start of a series featuring plot points from The Haunted Mask, Go Eat Worms! and The Cuckoo Clock of Doom — and an appearance by Slappy, the franchise’s fan-favorite living dummy. At the center of all the action is a decades-old tragedy involving the death of high schooler Harold Biddle (Ben Cockell) that has ties to the teens’ parents. New teacher Mr. Bratt (Justin Long), who moves into the Biddle house, becomes possessed by Harold. That leads to some of what EP Pavun Shetty calls the series’ “authentically funny” scenes. Adds Welch: “To watch Justin possessed by an awkward 15-year-old boy is really hysterical.” But maybe keep the lights on for this one, just in case. The first five episodes drop today on Disney+ and Hulu, with subsequent new episodes streaming weekly. The first two episodes also air tonight on Freeform. Emily Aslanian

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
MOVIES!, 10:20pm
Catch a Classic!

Horror movies have not often gotten Academy Award nominations, but the ones that have been nominated over the years have received nods in major categories and won a few of those times. The earliest instance came in this 1931 film, probably the best remembered of the many screen adaptations of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic 1886 novella The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, which earned star Fredric March a Best Actor Oscar (shared with The Champ’s Wallace Beery) for his terrific dual performance as Dr. Henry Jekyll and (with the help of some effectively monstrous makeup effects) his sinister alter ego, Edward Hyde. Costar Miriam Hopkins is also great in this film, which netted additional Oscar nominations for its screenplay adaptation and cinematography.
