Today marks the 82nd anniversary of the Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese attack on American military bases at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii that brought the United States into World War II. Turner Classic Movies commemorates that event with a morning and afternoon of classic films about that attack and the War in the Pacific that ensued. Several titles airing today were produced during the conflict, including Bataan (1943), led by Robert Taylor and George Murphy, which starts the lineup. Following that are Back to Bataan (1945), with John Wayne and Anthony Quinn; Air Force (1943), starring John Garfield and Gig Young; They Were Expendable (1945), directed by John Ford and featuring Wayne, Robert Montgomery and Donna Reed; Task Force (1949), led by Gary Cooper, Jane Wyatt and Walter Brennan; the Best Picture Oscar-winning From Here to Eternity (1953), headlined by Oscar nominees Montgomery Clift, Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr, and Oscar winners Reed and Frank Sinatra; and December 7th (1943), a propaganda documentary film about the Pearl Harbor attack produced by the U.S. Navy and codirected by Ford and Gregg Toland. This is the original, 83-minute version of the film; a 20-minute version won the Oscar for Best Documentary Short Subject.

To commemorate Hanukkah, TCM will celebrate “Tradition” with not one but two versions of author Sholem Aleichem’s Yiddish short stories about Tevya the Dairyman. First up is one of the most recognizable films in Jewish entertainment, the 1971 screen adaptation of the Broadway musical Fiddler on the Roof, which tells the story of a Jewish peasant (Topol) with traditional values who wrestles with marrying off his choosy daughters in pre-revolutionary Russia. The film won three Oscars, including Best Original Song Score. This is followed by the Yiddish film Tevya (1939), a nonmusical film adaptation.
