There is just something about the tale of A Star Is Born — an older, fading star of movies or music helps a younger up-and-comer reach the big time — that audiences and the Motion Picture Academy have found so compelling that the story has been retold in four film adaptations, and each version has been nominated for at least one Oscar, with three of them winning at least one statuette. This 1937 production of A Star Is Born was the first telling of the story. The Best Picture Oscar nominee stars Best Actress Oscar nominee Janet Gaynor and Best Actor nominee Fredric March. It won a Best Writing, Original Story Oscar, and received an Honorary Award for its color photography.

Each team of two friends is paired with a comedian guest, and the teams accumulate points by matching their teammates on a series of questions, with a bonus if any player matches America’s top answer. The celebrities switch teams in Round 2, and in Round 3, the trailing team picks the comedian partner they believe will help them win. The winning team moves on to the bonus round, where they can pick a comedian to match on each question. If the team gets three matches, they walk away with $10,000. The series airs weeknights starting this evening.

This series follows Lopez as she is pursued by the criminal empire of Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin (a returning Vincent D’Onofrio). Charlie Cox is also expected to return as Matt Murdock/Daredevil to some extent. Other cast members include Chaske Spencer, Graham Greene, Tantoo Cardinal, Devery Jacobs, Zahn McClarnon and Cody Lightning. Echo is the first Marvel Studios series to be rated TV-MA, so probably not a show for the kiddies.

The third and final six-episode season of the sci-fi sinkhole drama returns tonight. “The basic premise of the show is that anything could come down here, and in Season 3 we’re going to be able to exploit that in the biggest way, because we’ve opened up all these auroras,” tells series creator and showrunner David Appelbaum. In the season premiere episode, “Sierra,” after the clearing is destroyed in a dinosaur attack, the survivors must find a new home. Meanwhile, Gavin (Eoin Macken) finds a clue about where Eve (Natalie Zea) has been taken, but tracking the lead down results in even more tragic consequences.

As Turner Classic Movies’ monthlong Wednesday night salute to Columbia Pictures, which celebrates its centennial this month, continues, we move into some of the studio’s notable productions of the 1940s and ’50s. Up first is the classic film noir Gilda (1946), led by Rita Hayworth in an iconic performance as the titular femme fatale alongside Glenn Ford. After that is Best Director Oscar nominee George Cukor’s Best Picture-nominated comedy/drama Born Yesterday (1950), starring Best Actress winner Judy Holliday. Next is the TCM premiere of another Three Stooges short: You Natzy Spy! (1940); led by Moe, Larry and Curly, it is the first anti-Nazi comedy film released in Hollywood. Moving into late night, the lineup presents Best Director winner Elia Kazan’s Best Picture-winning drama On the Waterfront (1954), led by Best Actor winner Marlon Brando, Best Supporting Actress winner Eva Marie Saint, and Best Supporting Actor nominees Lee J. Cobb, Karl Malden and Rod Steiger. He is now living back home in Framingham, Massachusetts, with his best friend, 16-year-old John Bennett (Max Burkholder), along with John’s parents, Matty and Susan (Scott Grimes and Alanna Ubach), and cousin Blaire (Giorgia Whigham). Ted may be a lousy influence on John, but at the end of the day, he is a loyal pal always willing to go out on a limb for friendship.

It’s a simple “lift,” nothing complicated — other than the fact that the heist, involving $500 million in gold, will take place on a passenger plane at 40,000 feet. Kevin Hart, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Vincent D’Onofrio lead the cast.
Love Is Blind: Sweden

The popular dating experiment series lands in Sweden as 32 local singles seek true love and propose marriage, all before seeing each other in person. Swedish television presenter and reporter Jessica Almenäs hosts. The first four episodes drop today, followed by four more next Friday. The weddings episode will be available Jan. 26, and a reunion episode will conclude the season on a date that had yet to be determined at presstime.
