Based on the epic 1975 novel that also inspired the Richard Chamberlain miniseries in 1980, this new series takes place in feudal Japan and follows the rise of Lord Toranaga, a powerful Japanese magnate, through the eyes of an English sailor named John Blackthorne — a character modeled after William Adams, the first English navigator to reach Japan in 1600. Many of the other characters were modeled after real historical figures important to Japanese culture as well, including Lord Toranaga, played by Hiro Sanada. “It is a very universal drama,” Sanada said of the show. “Not just action, not just violence, geisha, stereotypes. Very universal, very poetic.”

New Series!

This three-part documentary takes viewers on a journey through one of the most contentious states in the country, led by three directors, each with their own unique and personal viewpoint. Oscar nominee Richard Linklater, Emmy winner Alex Stapleton, and Iliana Sosa return to their hometowns of Huntsville, Houston and El Paso, respectively, to shed light on underrepresented stories. In each part, the filmmakers trace the complex history of each city, examining how it intersects with their own origins and evolution and situating it in the larger picture of America today. Texas is a study in contradictions: a red state that hasn’t elected a Democrat to a statewide office in more than twenty years, yet a state in which minorities form a majority and whose blue cities are some of the more diverse in the nation. God Save Texas puts viewers on the ground with true Texans, unspooling narratives of diversity and inequalities as well as beauty within communities, specifically examining the personal toll that the prison system, oil business and border laws have on people living in these communities. The series premieres tonight with “Hometown Prison,” in which Linklater is in Huntsville to present a complex portrait of the criminal justice system in Texas through conversations with townsfolk across generations, prison employees and relatives of the imprisoned. The series concludes Wednesday on HBO with “The Price of Oil” and “La Frontera.”
