Classic Movies of the Week
TCM, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!
Back in the ’70s, broadcast networks produced many original films. While a lot of these titles led the term “Movie of the Week” to become synonymous with something instantly forgettable and of lower quality, both in budget and execution, there were a few productions that stood out and remain classics. Turner Classic Movies is airing four of them this evening. The lineup starts with Brian’s Song (1971), making its TCM premiere. Originally broadcast on ABC, this tear-jerking drama always ranks high whenever a list of “guy-cry” movies is put together and is a cut above a standard made-for-television production thanks in large part to its two leads: James Caan and Billy Dee Williams, both of whom received Emmy nominations for their performances. The movie recounts the life of Brian Piccolo (Caan), who played for the Chicago Bears for four years before he lost his life to cancer at age 26 in 1970. Piccolo’s story is told through his friendship with teammate Gale Sayers (Williams). Also making its TCM premiere is tonight’s next film, The Boy in the Plastic Bubble (1976). Inspired by a true story, it stars John Travolta as a teen who lives in a germ-free bubble due to having been born with immune deficiencies. Glynnis O’Connor costars as the girl whose love makes him want to leave his protected life and experience the world, even at the risk of his health and life. Up next is another movie that premiered on ABC: Duel (1971), the first full-length film directed by Steven Spielberg, with a screenplay by sci-fi legend Richard Matheson. Dennis Weaver plays a motorist driving through the desert who suddenly finds himself terrorized by a tanker truck driven by an unseen person. Spielberg’s “movie of the week” was so artfully crafted, with white-knuckle suspense reminiscent of what he would create a few years later in Jaws, that Duel was screened in European art houses. Finishing up the lineup early tomorrow is The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman (1974), which was first broadcast on CBS and stars Emmy winner Cicely Tyson as the title character, a Black woman in the South who was born into slavery during the 1850s and lives to tell her story during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s.

The Day the Earth Stood Still
MOVIES!, 11:05am
Catch a Classic!
Robert Wise directed this 1951 sci-fi classic that finds an alien named Klaatu (Michael Rennie) and his robot, Gort (Lock Martin), landing on Earth to warn the planet’s inhabitants to abandon their atomic weapons and aggression, and live peacefully with the other residents of the cosmos, or be destroyed. The film was groundbreaking and influential not only in its theme (humanity positioned as the greater threat to the universe, not some invading aliens), but also in composer Bernard Herrmann’s musical score, which featured one of the earliest cinematic uses of the theremin; that eerie-sounding instrument would soon become an almost-overused staple in other films of the spacey or spooky variety.

The Whole Story With Anderson Cooper: “Justice Delayed: The Story of C.J. Rice”
CNN, 8pm
CNN Anchor and Chief Washington Correspondent Jake Tapper shines a light on the harrowing story of C.J. Rice, a Philadelphia man who was convicted of attempted murder in 2013. Two years before his conviction, Rice, then 17 years old, was shot three times, with a bullet fracturing his pelvis, making it nearly impossible for him to walk. He turned to his childhood physician and Tapper’s father, Dr. Theodore Tapper, to help with his recovery. But just three weeks after Rice was shot, he was accused of shooting four people and fleeing the scene, which according to Dr. Tapper, would have been virtually impossible to commit in his poor physical state. Despite Dr. Tapper testifying to that fact, Rice was later convicted of these crimes in 2013 and sentenced to 30-60 years in prison. After speaking with his father about the case, Jake Tapper published a thorough, long-form investigation in The Atlantic in October 2022 called “This Is Not Justice: A Philadelphia Teenager and the Empty Promise of the Sixth Amendment,” diving into what happened the night of the shooting, how little evidence there was against Rice, and revealing how ineffective representation led to his wrongful conviction. Rice’s attorneys Karl Schwartz, Amelia Maxfield of the Exoneration Project and Nilam Sanghvi of the Pennsylvania Innocence Project made this precise argument, that Rice was denied his Sixth Amendment right to adequate counsel, to the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office. District Attorney Larry Krasner’s office investigated the matter and agreed. On the morning of Monday, March 18, a Philadelphia judge granted a motion from the Philadelphia District Attorney exonerating Rice. After more than 12 years in prison, Rice is a free man. In an emotional reunion, Tapper and his father reconnect with Rice, who speaks for the first time in an expansive interview. Tapper re-creates the scene of the shooting and the events that followed to clearly illustrate how the system failed Rice. The episode also follows Rice’s time in prison in his own words, through the powerful letters Rice sent to Dr. Tapper throughout the years.

TCM Star of the Month: Debbie Reynolds
TCM, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!
Turner Classic Movies’ five-night Star of the Month salute to legendary actress/singer Debbie Reynolds concludes tonight with six of the icon’s films from the 1960s and early ’70s. Up first is the 1964 Western musical comedy The Unsinkable Molly Brown, which earned Reynolds a Best Actress Oscar nomination as the title character, the only Oscar nod of her career. Next, Reynolds and Dick Van Dyke lead the 1967 satire Divorce American Style, which features an Oscar-nominated screenplay by Norman Lear (story by Robert Kaufman). Following that is a little change of pace for Reynolds, as she costars with Shelley Winters in the Oscar-nominated horror film What’s the Matter With Helen? (1971). Tonight’s lineup, and the weeklong salute, come to a close early tomorrow with The Second Time Around (1961), a Western comedy also featuring Andy Griffith; How the West Was Won (1962), an epic Western whose large ensemble cast also includes James Stewart, Spencer Tracy, Gregory Peck, Henry Fonda, Thelma Ritter, Agnes Moorehead and many more notables; and The Singing Nun (1966), with Reynolds in the title role alongside Ricardo Montalbán and Greer Garson.
Spermworld
FX, 9pm
There is a national sperm shortage. The demand for donated sperm has increased, while the number of men willing to become donors has not. The often prohibitive cost of fertility services and commercial sperm banks has led to an online marketplace that cuts out the middle man. Inspired by journalist Nellie Bowles’ article in The New York Times, director Lance Oppenheim’s feature-length documentary Spermworld explores what he calls an “online, unregulated sperm universe” often involving “strangers meeting to produce life in lonely places: strip malls at night, empty parking lots.” While that might sound seedy, the film reveals how attitudes about parenthood, family and human connection have evolved in an increasingly alienating society. “I wanted to make a film that touched on modern loneliness and the quest to solve that feeling through the internet, altruism and reproduction,” Oppenheim says. — Ryan A. The Ten Commandments
ABC, 7pm
Catch a Classic!
Nearly every year since 1973, with a few exceptions, ABC has re-aired this gigantic 1956 Best Picture Oscar-nominated religious epic on or around Easter — even though it relates more to the Passover holiday, given that its story comes from the Old Testament book of Exodus about Moses’ (Charlton Heston) deliverance of the Israelites from slavery at the hands of Egyptian pharaoh Rameses II (Yul Brynner). That tradition continues this year, as the network airs director Cecil B. DeMille’s thrilling achievement the night before Easter. Already a very lengthy film in its original format, the TV broadcast somehow seems to keep getting longer each year thanks to commercials, so if you’re recording the movie this year, be aware that your DVR will get quite a workout — ABC has it scheduled in a four-hour-and-44-minute time slot! But with a moviegoing experience this grand, the time flies by. It’s easy to say “they don’t make ’em like that anymore” regarding such films, but in the case of The Ten Commandments, that is literally true — with its massive live crowd shots (of both people and animals) and spectacular set designs, the cost of creating a film like this in the manner in which it was produced would certainly be viewed as prohibitive by any studio today. From an era in which biblical epics were common in Hollywood, DeMille’s work is one of the few that remains so highly watched and beloved to this day. Along with Heston in his iconic role as Moses (and as the voice of God via the burning bush) and Brynner, the film is also star-studded with the likes of Anne Baxter, an oddly cast Edward G. Robinson, Yvonne De Carlo, Debra Paget, John Derek, Vincent Price, John Carradine and more. DeMille is at the height of his directorial powers here as he wrangles so much into a captivating, if melodramatic, presentation. Among the film’s other technical achievements are its Oscar-winning special effects, and it also boasts a grand musical score by Elmer Bernstein.
