Turner Classic Movies continues its monthlong, Wednesday night spotlight on famous films with one-name titles using the name of a primary character. Tonight’s five-title lineup begins with the Best Picture Oscar-winning romantic drama Marty (1955), led by Best Actor winner Ernest Borgnine as Marty Piletti, alongside Best Supporting Actress nominee Betsy Blair. Next, Best Actor nominee James Stewart and Best Supporting Actress winner Josephine Hull star alongside Harvey (1950), a 6-foot-plus-tall rabbit who is invisible for most of the comedy/drama and is billed “as himself.” After that, Mia Farrow plays the adult Alice Tate in Alice (1990), writer/director Woody Allen’s fantasy romantic comedy. Then, in Tommy (1975), an adaptation of The Who’s 1969 rock opera album of the same name, band member Roger Daltrey plays deaf, mute and blind pinball wizard/religious leader Tommy Walker alongside Best Actress nominee Ann-Margret as his mother. Finally, Dustin Hoffman gives a Best Actor-nominated performance as Lenny Bruce in Lenny (1974), the Best Picture-nominated biopic about the comedian also starring Best Actress nominee Valerie Perrine.

Although better known in her later career for her supporting roles in sitcoms like All in the Family (she played Archie’s liberal neighbor Irene Lorenzo) and Laverne & Shirley (she was the girls’ landlady, Edna Babish), actress/comedian/singer/dancer Betty Garrett had a notable, if brief, big-screen stint in which she played other scene-stealing supporting characters. Celebrating what would have been Garrett’s 105th birthday (she was born May 23, 1919, in St. Joseph, Missouri, and died Feb. 12, 2011, in Los Angeles at age 91), Turner Classic Movies airs the first five of the seven feature-length films in which Garrett appeared from the late 1940s and into the late ’50s. Up first is her debut movie: Big City (1948), described on its movie poster as being a “big-hearted drama with songs” in which Garrett plays singer “Shoo Shoo” Grady. Next is the musical romantic comedy Neptune’s Daughter (1949), which finds Garrett playing the similarly named character Betty Barrett, the “man-crazy” sister of star Esther Williams’ character, Eve Barrett. Then, in the musical On the Town (1949), Garrett appears as Brunhilde “Hildy” Esterhazy, who takes to sailor-on-leave Chip (Frank Sinatra). Garrett and Sinatra also factor in the next musical, Take Me Out to the Ball Game (1949), in which Garrett’s Shirley Delwyn becomes an ardent fan of Sinatra’s ballplayer Dennis Ryan. Finally, Garrett appears in Words and Music (1948), a biographical musical film loosely based on the creative partnership between composer Richard Rodgers (Tom Drake) and lyricist Lorenz Hart (Mickey Rooney).

Starting this evening and continuing into the early morning of Tuesday, May 28, Turner Classic Movies celebrates Memorial Day with a nonstop lineup of war- and military-themed films. This evening’s schedule begins with The Caine Mutiny (1954), the Best Picture Oscar-nominated military trial drama that earned Humphrey Bogart a Best Actor nomination for his memorable performance as Lt. Cmdr. Queeg. After that is Platoon (1986), Best Director winner Oliver Stone’s Best Picture-winning Vietnam War drama, led by Charlie Sheen and Best Supporting Actor nominees Tom Berenger and Willem Dafoe. Next in the lineup are two Korean War-set films: director Anthony Mann’s Men in War (1957), starring Robert Ryan and Aldo Ray, and writer/director Samuel Fuller’s The Steel Helmet (1951), the first American film about the Korean conflict. After that is the World War II movie Go for Broke! (1951), a dramatization of the real-life 442nd Regimental Combat Team, which was made up of Nisei (second-generation Americans born of Japanese parents) soldiers. The film is led by Van Johnson and costars several actual veterans of the 442nd. Concluding tonight’s lineup of films and leading into tomorrow’s is the Best Picture-nominated comedy/drama The Human Comedy (1943), which earned star Mickey Rooney a Best Actor nod.
