Lucy Lawless is back as investigator Alexa Crowe in this Auckland, New Zealand-set mystery/comedy/drama. Alexa tackles eight puzzling new cases ranging from homicidal hairdressers to wicked widows and brutal ballet to deadly soufflés. This time, she is bringing her friends and family along for the ride: Tech guru Madison (Ebony Vagulans) is stepping up, café owner Reuben (Joe Naufahu) is stepping in, brother Will (Martin Henderson) is staying close, Detective Harry (Rawiri Jobe) has Alexa’s back and cranky cat Chowder can’t help complicating everything. The first two episodes are available today on Acorn TV, with the season premiere on BBC America this evening. New episodes will then drop Mondays on Acorn TV, and at the same time on BBC America.

The series also explores how disco culture, inextricably bound up with the major liberation movements of the ’70s, continues to speak to issues of today, including LGBTQ+ identity and female empowerment. The story is told by several of disco’s original musicians, promoters and innovators, as well as modern-day musical artists, and is accompanied by iconic tracks and remarkable footage.

Happy Juneteenth! Turner Classic Movies is celebrating this holiday with several ’70s classics that will make you laugh, sing, dance, cheer or all of the above not only with their stories, but also their accompanying soul/R&B soundtracks. Up first is the comedy Car Wash (1976), led by an ensemble including Franklyn Ajaye, Sully Boyar, the Pointer Sisters, Richard Pryor, Garrett Morris and many others, and highlighted by a great soundtrack that includes the catchy title tune by Rose Royce. Another terrific soundtrack enhances the next film, Mahogany (1975), a romantic drama from Motown Productions and directed by Motown founder Berry Gordy. Diana Ross, Billy Dee Williams and Anthony Perkins lead the cast, with Ross performing the Oscar-nominated “Theme From Mahogany (Do You Know Where You’re Going To).” A couple of “blaxploitation” action classics follow: Super Fly (1972), directed by Gordon Parks Jr., and headlined by Ron O’Neal and an influential soundtrack by Curtis Mayfield; and Shaft (1971), directed by Gordon Parks, starring Richard Roundtree and featuring the Oscar-winning song “Theme From Shaft” by Isaac Hayes, who was also nominated for his musical score. Finally, the musical drama Sparkle (1976), with a plot loosely inspired by the story of the Supremes, follows a girl group formed by three sisters (played by Irene Cara, Lonette McKee and Dwan Smith), whose success may end up ruining their relationship. The film’s highly successful soundtrack album was by Aretha Franklin, with songs written and produced by Mayfield.

Next is the Western The Far Country (1954), one of the eight films (mostly Westerns) that Stewart and director Anthony Mann made. The funny side of Stewart can be seen in the next title, the comedy Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation (1962). Next, Stewart portrays Charles Lindbergh in the Billy Wilder-directed biographical drama The Spirit of St. Louis (1957), and the lineup concludes with the World War II-set thriller Malaya (1950).

June is Pride Month, and tonight and next Friday, Turner Classic Movies celebrates with various films featuring LGBTQ+ characters, themes and icons, and/or created by and starring queer filmmakers/actors. Up first is Sylvia Scarlett (1935), the romantic comedy led by Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant, and whose gender-bending story and sexual politics were well ahead of its time. Next is the TCM premiere of Gay USA (1978), a documentary focusing on the gay rights movement of its time. Then comes Torch Song Trilogy (1988), a comedy/drama starring Harvey Fierstein, who adapted the screenplay from his play of the same name. Anne Bancroft and Matthew Broderick costar. Following that is The Queen (1968), an influential documentary that goes behind the scenes of a national drag queen contest in New York City. Moving into early tomorrow morning, the lineup features The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant (1972), a West German romantic drama led by an all-female cast; The Blue Angel (1930), the famed German musical comedy/drama that made Marlene Dietrich an international star; and the biographical drama Queen Christina (1933), led by Greta Garbo as the titular Swedish royal.

The titles he has chosen are The Go-Between (1971), a British historical drama starring Julie Christie, Alan Bates and Best Supporting Actress Oscar nominee Margaret Leighton, and Sunday Bloody Sunday (1971), a British drama that earned Oscar nods for stars Peter Finch and Glenda Jackson, as well as director John Schlesinger.
