TCM Morning & Afternoon Movies: The Olympic Spirit
TCM, beginning at 6am
Catch a Classic!
The 2024 Summer Olympics begin today, and Turner Classic Movies is offering a look back at previous Summer Games this morning and afternoon via several notable documentary films. Up first is The Olympic Games in Paris 1924 (1925), a roughly three-hour silent film that covers notable events and athletes at those games, including Harold Abrahams and Eric Liddell, who would later be famously dramatized in the 1981 film Chariots of Fire. Next is Games of the XXI Olympiad (1977), which runs about two hours and chronicles the 1976 Games that were held in Montreal, spotlighting legendary athletes like three-time gold medal-winning Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci and gold medal-winning American decathlete Caitlyn Jenner (known at that time and competing in men’s events, prior to her gender transition, as Bruce Jenner). The 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles are the subject of the next documentary, director Bud Greenspan’s award-winning 16 Days of Glory (1985), which runs over four-and-a-half hours and features footage of athletes such as Americans Carl Lewis (four-time gold medalist in track and field events) and Greg Louganis (two-time gold medalist in diving events). After that comes one of the most acclaimed Olympics documentaries, the Japanese film Tokyo Olympiad (1965), which, over its nearly three hours, not only captures events held at the 1964 Games in the title city but also weaves a rich, colorful and lovely dramatic tapestry while doing so. As today’s lineup concludes, we switch seasons with the half-hour 1980 short Olympic Spirit, which briefly chronicles the Winter Games that were held in Lake Placid, New York, notable for the United States’ “Miracle on Ice” win over the Soviet Union during the ice hockey tournament’s medal round.

Overwhelmed by passion, Humbert’s actions lead to a shocking and tragic conclusion. Peter Sellers also stars in this film that netted Nabokov a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar nomination (however, although the author was officially credited with the screenplay, most of what he wrote was actually eschewed in favor of rewrites by Kubrick and producer James B. Harris).

110th Anniversary of World War I
TCM, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!
On this date 110 years ago — July 28, 1914 — after escalating tensions across central and eastern Europe, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, marking the beginning of World War I. While there haven’t been quite as many movies made about this conflict as there have been about World War II, there have still been some notable ones, and Turner Classic Movies is airing two of them this evening to commemorate the start of this so-called “War to End All Wars.” Up first is The Guns of August (1964), a documentary based on Barbara W. Tuchman’s 1962 book of the same name that won the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction. Narrated by actor Fritz Weaver, the film traces the origins and events of the war, from instigating actions through the Treaty of Versailles, highlighted by footage found in the government archives of countries that took part, including the United States, France, England, Belgium and Germany. Tonight’s second feature is one of the most celebrated World War I films ever, and one produced just 12 years after the conflict ended: the Best Picture Oscar-winning All Quiet on the Western Front (1930). Quite realistic and harrowing even now, but especially for its time, the pre-Code anti-war drama, helmed by Best Director winner Lewis Milestone, is based on the 1929 novel of the same name by Erich Maria Remarque, a German veteran of the war. The story follows a young German man (played by Lew Ayres) who eagerly enters the hostilities, only to find his enthusiasm waning as he gets a firsthand look at its horrors.

TCM Spotlight: The Hays Gaze (90th Anniversary of the Hays Code)
TCM, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!
Turner Classic Movies’ monthlong Monday night remembrance of the Motion Picture Production Code (aka the Hays Code) that was instituted in Hollywood between 1934 and 1968 concludes with more double features of various themes considered to be controversial during the era, contrasting one made before enforcement of the Code with another made when the Code was more fully in effect. The first pairing looks at two films that deal with alcoholism: Night Nurse (1931), a pre-Code drama directed by William A. Wellman, which was also considered risqué for its scenes of stars Barbara Stanwyck and Joan Blondell in their lingerie, followed by the Best Picture Oscar-winning drama The Lost Weekend (1945), from Best Director winner Billy Wilder (who also shared an Oscar win for his screenplay with Charles Brackett) and starring Best Actor winner Ray Milland. After that are a couple of films that feature gangster molls among their characters: director Wellman’s pre-Code crime drama Midnight Mary (1933), led by Loretta Young as Mary Martin (aka “Midnight Mary”), followed by another crime drama, Marked Woman (1937), starring Bette Davis and Humphrey Bogart. Two Tarzan features conclude things early tomorrow: the pre-Code production Tarzan and His Mate (1934), the second film in MGM’s Tarzan franchise led by Johnny Weissmuller, which caused controversy because of the very revealing costume worn by Maureen O’Sullivan’s Jane, as well as her skinny-dipping sequence, and Tarzan Escapes (1936), the third film in the series and the first produced under the Code, also led by Weissmuller and O’Sullivan.

The Endless Summer
TCM, 8pm
Catch a Classic!
Catch a few waves with this 1966 title from producer/director Bruce Brown, an early pioneer of surfing documentaries, the most famous of which is this legendary film. Brown and his camera follow two young surfers — Mike Hynson and Robert August — around the world in search of the perfect wave, finding a few of them as well as some colorful local characters at their various stops, which include the coasts of California, Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, Hawaii, South Africa and more. Befitting the surf culture it celebrates, The Endless Summer is presented in a fairly relaxed and laid-back manner, especially when compared with other docs of that era, and is beautifully shot. Following this film is Brown’s 1994 documentary The Endless Summer II, which follows a couple of other young surfers as it also shows how the surfing scene had grown in the nearly 30 years between the productions. After that is The Endless Summer Revisited (2000), on which Brown served as an executive producer, and which was written and directed by his son, Dana Brown. It is made up of unused footage from the first two Endless Summer documentaries. The evening concludes with two documentaries about motorcycle sports: On Any Sunday (1971), which Bruce Brown produced and directed, and On Any Sunday: Motocross, Malcolm & More (2001), written, produced, directed and edited by Dana Brown.

Following that, Sinatra is the “Ryan” of the title in the World War II adventure flick Von Ryan’s Express (1965), also starring Trevor Howard.
