Technology in the Movies — Part 1
TCM, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!
Tonight and next Thursday, Sept. 19, Turner Classic Movies offers lineups of films about how technology is presented in movies — the good and bad aspects of tech as well as, in the case of at least a few of the featured titles, its potential for frightening and unpredictable results. Tonight’s five-film lineup opens with one of the most iconic sci-fi features of all time, 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). Stanley Kubrick’s production itself pushed the limits of movie technology for its time and still looks fantastic as it imagines how humanity’s ingenuity could bring us from dwelling in caves to traveling the stars, while at the same time creating an artificial intelligence in the form of the HAL 9000 computer (creepily voiced by Douglas Rain) so humanlike that it is even capable of losing its mind and becoming murderous. Following that is Jean-Luc Godard’s 1965 French New Wave sci-fi/neo-noir film Alphaville. It is set in the futuristic dystopia of the title, where a secret agent (Eddie Constantine) works to save the city from Alpha 60, a sentient and dictatorial computer that controls everything. Another future dystopia is the setting for the next film, Logan’s Run (1976), led by Michael York and Jenny Agutter, where a central computer takes care of the residents’ hedonistic lifestyles, including reproduction — until they reach the age of 30 and are slated to be killed. Late night brings the weird sci-fi thriller Demon Seed (1977), featuring Robert Vaughn as the voice of the Proteus IV computer, an AI so advanced, autonomous and sinister that it traps a woman (Julie Christie) in her home with a plan to somehow forcibly impregnate her. The lineup concludes with Brainstorm (1983), about researchers who invent a brain-computer interface allowing them to jump into people’s minds, with some predictably frightening results. The film was directed by special effects legend Douglas Trumbull, and is led by Christopher Walken and Natalie Wood in her final film.

Roller Boogie
TCM, 12pm
Catch a Classic!
Hitting theaters at the tail end of the ’70s, on Dec. 21, 1979, this cult classic romantic musical drama capitalized on trends that were still popular at the time: disco music and roller-skating, with many dancers who laced up their skates adopting incredibly athletic and rhythmic moves as they “roller-boogied” to disco hits at the local rink. That’s the case for the characters here — played by a cast led by Linda Blair and Jim Bray, who had been a competitive artistic roller skater — who must protect their go-to skate place Jammer’s from a mob takeover. The real draw here is the spectacular skate sequences (including, of course, a final Boogie Contest). The numbers are set to a soundtrack that, while not on par with Thank God It’s Friday or Saturday Night Fever, is still full of disco goodness, with some higher-profile titles like Cher’s “Hell on Wheels” and “Boogie Wonderland” by Earth, Wind & Fire.
