Technology in the Movies — Part 2
TCM, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!

The second of two nights devoted to notable depictions of technology in films concludes with five titles tonight. Given that many of the movies spotlighted so far have been set in future dystopias and/or featured psychotic computers, you might be surprised to find a Spencer Tracy/Katharine Hepburn-led romantic comedy leading things off tonight. But Desk Set (1957) does indeed deal with technology, and in fact might have been one of the earliest films to look at how computers could impact everyday work and life, with Tracy and Hepburn playing two strong-willed personalities clashing over the potential computerization of a television network’s research department via an “electronic brain” known as the EMERAC (“Emmy,” for short). Next, in the famed comedy Modern Times (1936), writer/director/star Charlie Chaplin’s “Little Tramp” character struggles to survive as a factory worker in an increasingly industrialized world. Following that is Westworld (1973), written and directed by Michael Crichton, about an amusement park with different themed “worlds” where visitors interact with lifelike androids (including Yul Brynner’s Gunslinger), who unfortunately begin to malfunction. The lineup concludes in late night with director Fritz Lang’s silent sci-fi masterpiece Metropolis (1927) and THX 1138 (1971), a film set in a future dystopia that was expanded by cowriter/director George Lucas from a student film.

Strangers on a Train
TCM, 9am
Catch a Classic!

Robert Burks rightly earned an Oscar nomination for his black-and-white cinematography in this 1951 suspense classic based on Patricia Highsmith’s novel, but how Alfred Hitchcock did not receive a directing nod, nor Robert Walker an acting nomination for his chilling performance as Bruno Antony, is beyond us. Either way, it is a thrilling watch, as pro tennis player Guy Haines (Farley Granger) has the bad luck of happening to sit next to Walker’s Antony on a train, and their conversation turns toward Antony “jokingly” suggesting that the two men “trade murders” — Antony will kill Haines’ wife if Haines kills Antony’s father. Unfortunately for Haines, the deranged Antony is not joking at all; he proceeds with his end of the deal, and makes life increasingly terrifying for Haines in order to get him to hold up his. The film’s classic climax aboard an out-of-control carousel isn’t the only way in which the Master of Suspense delivers a memorable thrill ride with this production. Strangers on a Train is a highlight among other train-based thrillers that TCM is airing starting earlier this morning and continuing through this afternoon. Other notable titles you might want to get onboard for include Shanghai Express (1932), Avalanche Express (1979) and Berlin Express (1948).

Jeremiah Johnson
TCM, 5:45pm
Catch a Classic!

If all you’ve seen of Robert Redford’s 1972 film Jeremiah Johnson is the ubiquitous “bearded guy nodding approvingly” clip that has been used as a popular internet reaction meme for a while now, here’s your chance to check out its full, compelling source material. In director Sydney Pollack’s film — the first Western to ever be accepted into the Cannes Film Festival, where it was in competition for the highest prize, the Palme d’Or — Redford plays the title character, a veteran of the Mexican-American War who becomes an isolated mountain man enduring cruel winters alone in the Rockies, supporting himself as a trapper while engaged in personal war with the Crow warriors responsible for the deaths of his common-law wife and adopted son. Based partly on the life of real-life mountain man John Jeremiah Johnson, the film features terrific location filming shot in many areas across Utah.

Truths With Vivek Ramaswamy
FOX Nation
New Series!

FOX Nation has tapped former Republican presidential candidate and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy to host this new series for the streaming service. Ramaswamy discusses hard issues that the American conservative movement must embrace, with topics including American national identity, the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Israel, protests on U.S. college campuses, religion, and more. Alongside a panel including his wife Apoorva Ramaswamy, journalist Matt Taibbi, American theoretical physicist Steven Koonin, Priovant Therapeutics CEO Ben Zimmer, Rabbi Shmully Hecht and others in a roundtable style format, Ramaswamy will dissect the best ways to speak about these issues even with those who do not agree. “Today conservatives know what we’re against. But what exactly do we stand for?” Ramaswamy asks. “To answer that question, we need to talk to every American, not just those who agree with us. That’s the subject of my new book TRUTHS: The Future of America-First, and I enjoyed partnering with FOX Nation to host provocative dinner table conversations that we rarely have in our country anymore.” A condensed version of the show airs on FOX News Channel Sunday at 10pm ET.

Our Man Flint & In Like Flint
FXM, beginning at 11:10am
Catch a Classic!

Among the better spy movie parodies to hit movie theaters during the 1960s, following the overwhelming success of the James Bond films, were Our Man Flint (1966) and its sequel, In Like Flint (1967). The Flint films left cultural legacies of their own, even if not as large as the Bond titles, and are still entertaining. They star James Coburn as master spy Derek Flint, an agent for Z.O.W.I.E. (Zonal Organization World Intelligence Espionage). In Our Man Flint, which gave Coburn a new image of sorts as a suave leading man over the more grizzled characters he had previously played, Flint is on the case when mad scientists threaten the world with a device that can create earthquakes, storms and other natural disasters. Lee J. Cobb costars as Flint’s boss, and Jerry Goldsmith composed the cool musical score. All three were back for In Like Flint, in which our hero takes on a cabal of women plotting to rule the world.

Catch a Classic!

Tonight, Turner Classic Movies remembers late, great actor Donald Sutherland, who passed away in Miami June 20 at age 88 (he was born July 17, 1935, in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada), with four of his memorable films this evening. While Sutherland himself was somehow never even nominated for an Academy Award, the actor was a big part of many lauded films and certainly contributed a great deal to their successes, as you can see with this evening’s titles. The lineup begins with Best Director Oscar nominee Robert Altman’s Best Picture Oscar-nominated, darkly satiric 1970 Korean War-set film M*A*S*H. As Hawkeye Pierce, Sutherland leads an outstanding ensemble cast including Elliott Gould, Tom Skerritt, Robert Duvall and Best Supporting Actress nominee Sally Kellerman. Next is the Best Picture-winning 1980 drama Ordinary People, from Best Director winner Robert Redford. In this emotionally wrenching film, Sutherland stars alongside Best Actress nominee Mary Tyler Moore, Best Supporting Actor winner Timothy Hutton and Supporting Actor nominee Judd Hirsch. Moving more into late night, the lineup features Klute (1971), the classic psychological thriller that pairs Sutherland with Best Actress winner Jane Fonda, before concluding early tomorrow with Kelly’s Heroes (1970), a World War II comedic heist film with a terrific cast that also includes Clint Eastwood, Telly Savalas, Don Rickles and Carroll O’Connor.

Humphrey Bogart and Tim Holt star as Fred C. Dobbs and Bob Curtin, down-on-their-luck American vagrants in 1925 Mexico who team up with a grizzled prospector named Howard (Huston’s father Walter, who won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar) in search of gold in the central Mexican wilds. Through enormous difficulties, they eventually succeed in finding gold, but bandits (who famously “ain’t got no badges”), the elements and, most especially, greed threaten to turn their success into disaster. Bruce Bennett, Barton MacLane and Alfonso Bedoya also star in this legendary production that shot on location south of the border and cost a then-unheard-of $3 million to make.

This atmospheric and influential 1944 mystery was among the earliest film noir titles, and the first film to feature Raymond Chandler’s legendary private eye Philip Marlowe. While the character of Marlowe is most associated with Humphrey Bogart’s portrayal a few years later in The Big Sleep, Dick Powell gives a charismatic, cast-against-type, hard-boiled and gritty performance as the detective in this adaptation of Chandler’s novel Farewell, My Lovely (the title under which the film was released in the U.K.), and the film is regarded as one of the better Chandler adaptations. Costarring with Powell are Claire Trevor, Anne Shirley and Otto Kruger, who offers his usual terrific brand of charismatic villainy.
