Whether with or without birds at hand, Stroud spent a life sentence in prison becoming a self-taught — and eminent — ornithologist. He shows extraordinary talent but struggles to finish commissions. Later, in Milan, he paints a monumental fresco of the Last Supper. Part 2 airs tomorrow night.

Swedish-American actress Greta Lovisa Gustafsson — better known as Greta Garbo — is the focus of tonight’s six-film lineup on Turner Classic Movies. Before getting into the iconic star’s films themselves, the evening begins with the 2005 documentary Garbo, which is narrated by Julie Christie and explores Garbo’s life and career. Following that is Grand Hotel (1932), the Best Picture Oscar-winning drama led by Garbo as Russian ballerina Grusinskaya, who famously states, “I want to be alone.” The film’s outstanding all-star ensemble cast also features John Barrymore, Joan Crawford, Wallace Beery, Lionel Barrymore and Lewis Stone in one of the seven films he appeared in with Garbo. Next is the second-to-last movie Garbo made before retirement: Ninotchka (1939), director Ernst Lubitsch’s Best Picture-nominated comedy that earned Garbo her fourth and final Best Actress Oscar nomination in the title role. Following that is A Woman of Affairs (1928), a silent drama that marked the first time Garbo and Stone starred together. The lineup concludes with two more films featuring Best Actress-nominated performances by Garbo: the romantic drama Camille (1937) and Anna Christie (1930), which is based on Eugene O’Neill’s play and was Garbo’s first sound production (the film’s famous marketing slogan was “Garbo Talks!”).

To narrow it down even further, several quintessential examples of the form were released in 1944, and Turner Classic Movies is airing five of them this evening. The lineup begins with Best Director Oscar nominee Billy Wilder’s Best Picture-nominated Double Indemnity, led by Barbara Stanwyck in a Best Actress-nominated role as one of the screen’s great femme fatales, alongside Fred MacMurray. Following that is another classic helmed by an Oscar-nominated director: Otto Preminger’s Laura, starring Gene Tierney, Dana Andrews and Best Supporting Actor nominee Clifton Webb. Next is Murder, My Sweet, starring Dick Powell as Raymond Chandler’s private detective Philip Marlowe in an adaptation of Chandler’s novel Farewell, My Lovely (the first time Marlowe was depicted on the big screen). When adapting Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur’s hit 1928 play The Front Page into this film, Hawks had the inspired idea of turning its star reporter character Hildy Johnson into a woman. The result is an immortal mix of hard-boiled newsroom setting and remarriage comedy, and Rosalind Russell as Hildy is a standout among cinema’s powerful women. She is matched in force only by her conniving but charismatic editor and ex-husband, Walter Burns (Cary Grant). Burns dangles the chance for Hildy to scoop her fellow reporters with the story of an impending execution in order to keep her from hopping the train that’s supposed to take her to Albany and a new life as a housewife married to bland insurance man Bruce Baldwin (Ralph Bellamy).
