The actor/dancer who was born George Ranft but became more renowned professionally as George Raft, one of the more stylish of the screen’s leading men in the 1930s and ’40s, is celebrated each Tuesday night on Turner Classic Movies with lineups of his most memorable films. Many of the titles are the crime melodramas in which Raft became associated with playing gangsters, including the one that begins this month’s lineup tonight: 1932’s Scarface, with Raft starring alongside Paul Muni, who plays the title character. Among the other highlights this evening are Night After Night (1932), a drama costarring Mae West in her first movie role, and You and Me (1938), an odd crime drama/romantic comedy directed by Fritz Lang that pairs Raft with Sylvia Sidney.

If you can’t get enough of Elvis, today is the day to tune in. All day long, TCM will be airing an array of films featuring the King of Rock ’n’ Roll on what would have been his 90th birthday, beginning with a lesser-known 1968 flick called Live a Little, Love a Little about a photographer moonlighting to make ends meet, and ending with the 1972 documentary Elvis on Tour late into the night. Some highlights of the movies in between include the 1957 hit Jailhouse Rock, and the 1964 musical comedy Viva Las Vegas, costarring Ann-Margret.

Beloved actress Terry Ann Garr, better known as Teri Garr, passed away Oct. 29 at the age of 79. Turner Classic Movies celebrates the star this evening with three of her memorable films. The first two feature Garr in the comedic roles for which she is most remembered, beginning with Mel Brooks’ 1974 classic Young Frankenstein, in which Garr’s performance as Inga alongside Gene Wilder, Peter Boyle, Marty Feldman and Cloris Leachman enhances the humor and helped this film consistently land on most people’s list of greatest comedies ever. Following that, Garr stars with George Burns and John Denver in Oh, God! (1977), directed by Carl Reiner. The final film shows Garr’s dramatic range as she plays the mother of young Alec Ramsey (Kelly Reno) in The Black Stallion (1979), which also features Mickey Rooney in a Best Supporting Actor Oscar-nominated performance.

Turner Classic Movies’ monthlong look at notable films that have used dream sequences, featured stories that turned out to be only a dream or used other aspects of dreams, daydreams and nightmares onscreen continues tonight. Up first, Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland) has a particularly vivid and entertaining (for the audience, at least) dream of a visit to a place somewhere over the rainbow in The Wizard of Oz (1939). After that is another musical fantasy involving a child (Tommy Rettig) dreaming himself into a different realm: The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T (1953), featuring a screenplay cowritten by Dr. Seuss. Next comes the Abbott and Costello comedy Jack and the Beanstalk (1952), followed by three musical romantic comedies: My Dream Is Yours (1949), Du Barry Was a Lady (1943) and Carefree (1938), led by Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.

Steve Martin made the move from stand-up to movie leading man with this 1979 comedy that he cowrote with Carl Gottlieb and Michael Elias, and was directed by Carl Reiner. The film, costarring Bernadette Peters, became a hit with audiences (it was the eighth highest-grossing film of the year despite being released in December) and (largely) with critics, and remains a hilarious classic.
