Over the course of its roughly 30-year existence, from 1929-59, RKO Pictures was among the top film studios during Hollywood’s golden age. It produced titles in a variety of genres, but RKO’s horror features were especially good, the best made during that time along with Universal and its collection of monsters. This morning and afternoon, TCM is airing eight RKO horror classics; seven of them are movies produced by Val Lewton that generally featured more understated chills and psychological horror, and less outright monsters, and were often more effective by doing so: The Seventh Victim (1943), Cat People (1942), Isle of the Dead (1945), The Curse of the Cat People (1944), The Body Snatcher (1945), I Walked With a Zombie (1943) and The Ghost Ship (1943). Airing just before The Ghost Ship is an iconic RKO title from another legendary producer who had a stint at the studio, David O. Selznick, that did feature a memorable monster: King Kong (1933).

One of the most beloved movie musicals of all time, 1952’s Singin’ in the Rain remains an enjoyable and influential masterpiece nearly 70 years after its premiere. Set during the era when silent movies are giving way to talking pictures, the film follows a dancer turned matinee idol (Gene Kelly) who is caught in the bumpy transition along with his buddy (Golden Globe winner Donald O’Connor), a potential love interest (Debbie Reynolds) and a costar (Best Supporting Actress Oscar nominee Jean Hagen). The cast is exceptional, but beyond the fun performances, it’s also worth continuing to marvel at the technical achievement of the film (which was co-directed and -choreographed by Kelly and Stanley Donen), which is especially evident during Kelly’s iconic sequence where he does, in fact, sing (and dance) in the rain.

In fourth-century Egypt, there is no bandit more bloodthirsty than a runaway slave named Moses. But during a sudden moment of faith, Moses decides to make the remarkable decision to cast aside his former life and give up violence. Searching for new meaning, Moses finds himself at a remote desert monastery, where he undergoes a tumultuous personal journey in pursuit of a life dedicated to Christ. Slowly Moses transforms into a leader in the community, until his decision to embrace nonviolence comes to a head during a raid on his new home.

Yes, he could sell his fancy car rather than spend his time sneaking into nearby mansions, but the loss of his job so shortly after losing his wife has resulted in a bit of a midlife crisis — which is unfortunate for him, but a fun watch for us. Author Jonathan Tropper — who was also behind the film This Is Where I Leave You and the unique crime drama series Banshee — is at the wheel as showrunner and director, so you can expect greatness.

Happy National Pet Day! Turner Classic Movies is celebrating with several films featuring Skippy, the wire fox terrier who was as familiar a big-screen presence in the 1930s and ’40s as Bette Davis or Clark Gable (especially his appearances in the Thin Man movies as “Asta,” which were so popular that Skippy was often referred to as “Asta” offscreen). Nearly a decade of Skippy’s roughly 20-year life (he lived circa 1931-51) was spent as an actor in films like these that are airing today on TCM: The Kennel Murder Case (1933), The Half Naked Truth (1932), Fog Over Frisco (1934), The Firebird (1934), I’m Still Alive (1940), Call It a Day (1937), Bringing Up Baby (1938), The Thin Man (1934) and After the Thin Man (1936).

Millie Gibson also returns as Ruby Sunday. The season’s second episode guest-stars Alan Cumming as the voice of Mr. Ring-a-Ding, a happy, funny, singalong cartoon character whose discovery of the real world beyond the screen leads to terrifying consequences. The Ten Commandments

Nearly every year since 1973, with a few exceptions, ABC has re-aired this gigantic 1956 Best Picture Oscar-nominated religious epic around Easter and Passover, given its story comes from the Old Testament book of Exodus about Moses’ (Charlton Heston) deliverance of the Israelites from slavery at the hands of Egyptian pharaoh Rameses II (Yul Brynner). That tradition continues this year, as the network airs director Cecil B. DeMille’s thrilling achievement on what is the first night of Passover. Already a very lengthy film in its original format, the TV broadcast somehow seems to keep getting longer each year thanks to commercials, so if you’re recording the movie this year, be aware that your DVR will get quite a workout — ABC has it scheduled in a four-hour-and-44-minute time slot! But with a moviegoing experience this grand, the time flies by. It’s easy to say “they don’t make ’em like that anymore” regarding such films, but in the case of The Ten Commandments, that is literally true — with its massive live crowd shots (of both people and animals) and spectacular set designs, the cost of creating a film like this in the manner in which it was produced would certainly be viewed as prohibitive by any studio today. From an era in which biblical epics were fairly common in Hollywood, DeMille’s work is one of the few that remains so highly watched and beloved to this day. Along with Heston in his iconic role as Moses (and as the voice of God via the burning bush) and Brynner, the film is also star-studded with the likes of Anne Baxter, an oddly cast Edward G. Robinson, Yvonne De Carlo, Debra Paget, John Derek, Vincent Price, John Carradine and more. DeMille is at the height of his directorial powers here as he wrangles so much into a captivating, if melodramatic, presentation. Among the film’s other technical achievements are its Oscar-winning special effects, and it also boasts a grand musical score by Elmer Bernstein.
