It analyzes four actual life-and-death scenarios, beginning in tonight’s premiere episode, “Pirate Hijack,” which looks at how a pro bono team of hostage negotiators tried to help free 26 fishermen held hostage by Somali pirates for over four years.

This Japanese action thriller is a remake of the 1975 Japanese film The Bullet Train, which was one of the inspirations for the 1994 American film Speed. Directed by Shinji Higuchi (Shin Godzilla), Bullet Train Explosion similarly follows people desperately trying to save the lives of passengers after a group trying to extort money from the government straps bombs to a bullet train in Japan.

The angst, loneliness, anger and alienation of postwar, middle-class suburban teens is explored in an iconic way in this legendary 1955 drama, one of the first to focus on the “generation gap” between parents and children. Well-crafted in its own right, Rebel surely benefits from what has become the almost-mythic and very charismatic aura of its star, James Dean, an icon of cool who tragically was killed in a car crash about a month before the film was released. As new kid in town Jim, Dean plays what ranks as moviedom’s ultimate teenage rebel, and his Oscar-nominated costars — Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo — are just as compelling to watch under the powerful direction of Nicholas Ray, who received an Oscar nomination for Best Writing, Motion Picture Story in the second-to-last year for that category.

As Detective Chief Inspector Morgan (Harry Lloyd) and Detective Constable Jones (Liz Kingsman) delve further into the case, they realize Jack’s cause of death was, in fact, murder. Their sights turn to the Wright family, where the mother of all feuds is beginning. As each family member becomes more reckless and desperate in their bid to own a piece of Jack’s legacy, dark secrets and resentments are revealed, with explosive consequences. Happy birthday to Shirley MacLean Beaty — better known as actress Shirley MacLaine! The acclaimed star turns 91 today (she was born in Richmond, Virginia, on April 24, 1934). TCM is celebrating the birthday girl today with six of her films: The Yellow Rolls-Royce (1964), a British drama also starring Ingrid Bergman, Rex Harrison, Jeanne Moreau, George C. Scott and Omar Sharif; Around the World in 80 Days (1956), the epic, Best Picture Oscar-winning adventure comedy based on Jules Verne’s novel also led by David Niven; The Sheepman (1958), a Western comedy costarring Glenn Ford and Leslie Nielsen; Some Came Running (1958), a drama that earned MacLaine the first of her five Best Actress Oscar nominations, alongside her Rat Pack pals Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin; Being There (1979), the comedy/drama led by Best Actor nominee Peter Sellers and Melvyn Douglas in one of his final roles; and Two Loves (1961), a drama costarring Laurence Harvey (MacLaine laughingly described this film to the Naples Daily News in a 2011 interview as “a terrible movie no one has ever heard of”; well, now you have!).

Turner Classic Movies’ monthlong Friday night celebration of films that are based on works of pulp fiction (or are just pulpy in their own right) concludes this evening with a lineup of sci-fi and fantasy titles. Up first is The Thing From Another World (1951), the classic about a team of military and scientific personnel trapped at the Arctic Circle with a deadly alien invader that has been accidentally thawed from its long slumber in the ice; The Land That Time Forgot (1974), based on pulp master Edgar Rice Burrough’s novel about a World War I U-boat crew and some torpedoed passengers they’ve picked up happening upon a hidden world where prehistoric creatures still exist; Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze (1975), an action film led by Ron Ely as the titular hero who first appeared in 1930s pulp magazines; the sword-and-sorcery flick Red Sonja (1985), starring Brigitte Nielsen, in her film debut, as the title warrior, originally created by Robert E. Howard of Conan the Barbarian fame (Arnold Schwarzenegger has a supporting role here); She (1965), an adventure film from Britain’s Hammer Studios, starring Ursula Andress and Peter Cushing, and based on the 1887 novel by H. Rider Haggard (King Solomon’s Mines); and Time After Time (1979), a sci-fi tale that imagines The Time Machine author H.G. Wells (Malcolm McDowell) using a real-life time machine to pursue Jack the Ripper (David Warner), who has also used the device to escape from the late 19th century into the late 1970s, where he begins another murder spree.
