Season Finale!
Two episodes of this revival of the classic sitcom air tonight to finish out its third season. First, in “Funnest Judge in the City,” Abby (Melissa Rauch) suspects the courthouse’s new “fun judge” (guest star Michael Urie) may not be as fun as he seems, and Gurgs (Lacretta) must regain control when her new courthouse welcome video, starring Roz (guest star Marsha Warfield), takes on a life of its own. Then, in the season finale, “A Decent Proposal,” Abby finds herself in charge of two runaway teens; Dan (John Larroquette) and Julianne (Wendie Malick) balk at the idea that they’ve become friends; and a surprise appearance by a mysterious stranger (guest star Simon Helberg) turns Abby’s world upside down. NBC has not announced if Night Court will return for Season 4.

The series gathers players from diverse professional backgrounds for seven intense days of competition to determine the brightest mind. This sports docuseries returns with three new series films, beginning today with Shooting Guards. Former Washington Wizards teammates Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton shook the basketball world with their infamous gun incident in 2009, but what really went down when guns were drawn in their NBA locker room? Through raw firsthand accounts, Arenas and Crittenton unpack the events that had a life-altering impact on both men, and ultimately led Crittenton down a dark and tragic past. The next two films will drop the next two Tuesdays.

Turner Classic Movies’ monthlong Tuesday and Thursday night look at the history of Westerns via themed lineups continues with “The Quintessential Cowboy: John Wayne and the Idea of America.” Wayne is one of the most important and popular film actors of all time, and the actor most identified with the Western genre. In many of his films, Wayne’s characters glorified the idea of Manifest Destiny, the belief that the United States was meant to expand west, imposing its values and way of life beyond its borders. Starting with his first starring role in The Big Trail (1930), which begins tonight’s lineup, Wayne was depicted heroically fighting Native Americans and taking their land so the country could grow. The popularity of these films helped establish the idea that America is special and holds a unique place in the world. You can also see elements of this in the other Wayne-led films airing tonight: Stagecoach (1939), directed by John Ford and also starring Claire Trevor, Andy Devine and John Carradine; director Howard Hawks’ Red River (1948), which costars Montgomery Clift and Walter Brennan; and How the West Was Won (1962), an epic Western with a story spanning 50 years that was codirected by Ford, Henry Hathaway and George Marshall, and has a large cast also including James Stewart, Debbie Reynolds, Gregory Peck, Henry Fonda and Lee J. Cobb.

Orson Welles’ 1941 classic is regularly at, or very near, the top of many people’s list of greatest movies of all time, and watching it again (or for the first time) tonight, you will be reminded why. After more than 80 years, the stunningly original innovation that Welles put into the film’s direction and camerawork, with the help of Oscar-nominated cinematographer Gregg Toland, helps it look like it could have been made in the modern era — it’s easy to forget it was produced in the early ’40s. It’s all the more impressive when you realize that Welles made this masterful, Best Picture Oscar-nominated film when he was only in his mid 20s. Along with directing (for which he received an Oscar nomination), producing and cowriting Citizen Kane (with Herman J. Mankiewicz; the duo won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay), Welles also stars in his Best Actor Oscar-nominated title role, a not-so-subtle dramatization of tycoon William Randolph Hearst. Welles leads an equally incredible cast that also includes Joseph Cotten, Dorothy Comingore, Everett Sloane and more.

Turner Classic Movies’ monthlong Tuesday and Thursday night look at the history of Westerns via themed lineups continues with “Rugged Individualism.” Since its founding, America has always glorified the individual over the collective. The Constitution helped establish the nation as a place where anyone can thrive through hard work and determination, and the American frontier — with its rugged landscape, lawlessness and lack of infrastructure — rewarded those who could make their own way and overcome difficult conditions. The “lone cowboy” character was often featured in Westerns, symbolizing these ideas of freedom and self-reliance, and helped to ingrain these values into the American consciousness. Examples of that theme can be seen in tonight’s lineup: The Man From Laramie (1955), one of the great James Stewart-led Westerns directed by Anthony Mann; Ride Lonesome (1959), starring Randolph Scott, Karen Steele and James Coburn in his film debut; writer/director Samuel Fuller’s Forty Guns (1957), led by Barbara Stanwyck, Barry Sullivan and Gene Barry; High Plains Drifter (1973), directed by Clint Eastwood, who also stars as another one of those nameless strangers he initially became famous for around this era; Hang ’Em High (1968), also led by Eastwood (this time as a named character) alongside Inger Stevens, Ed Begley and Pat Hingle; and The Oklahoma Kid (1939), starring James Cagney as a heroic gunslinger and Humphrey Bogart as his black-clad villainous nemesis.

Cowriter/director George A. Romero’s influential 1968 horror classic Night of the Living Dead not only popularized zombies in pop culture but also remains one of the more terrifying depictions of these flesh-eating ghouls, as they attack a rural farmhouse where seven people have been trapped following the sudden uprising of the living dead. The film’s social commentary is also as relevant and affecting as its shocks and chills. Some inspiration for the movie appears to have come from Richard Matheson’s 1954 novel I Am Legend, so it’s fitting that MOVIES! follows up Living Dead tonight with The Last Man on Earth (1964), the first film adaptation of I Am Legend, and still one of the most effective. Here, Vincent Price plays a man who becomes a reluctant vampire hunter after a disease apparently turns the rest of humanity into the living dead. Following this, catch David Cronenberg’s Rabid (1977), starring Marilyn Chambers and Frank Moore, and wrap up the night with Romero’s Day of the Dead (1985).
