The first participant to reach Destination X will be crowned the winner.

As the auditions begin, the show welcomes a magician who recruits home viewers to participate, a danger act with a superhuman ability and undeniable Golden Buzzers that captivate the judges. The episode will also feature an intimate, behind-the-scenes look at the series. Results shows air on Wednesday nights beginning tomorrow (May 28); the live shows will kick off from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium beginning Tuesday, Aug. 19.

Turner Classic Movies’ monthlong Tuesday and Thursday night look at the history of Westerns via themed lineups continues with “American Psyche.” Some Westerns have delved deep into the psychology of their protagonists, analyzing the internal motives and conflicts that propel them. That is the case in tonight’s lineup of films, which begins with what is considered by many to be the greatest Western of all time: director John Ford’s The Searchers (1956), led by John Wayne, Jeffrey Hunter, Vera Miles, Ward Bond and Natalie Wood. It tells the story of a man driven by hatred and bigotry; Wayne’s Ethan Edwards is the hero of the story, but certainly a flawed and complicated one. Next, director King Vidor’s psychological Western Duel in the Sun (1946) explores themes of love, lust and passion in the rare Western with a woman as its main character, played by Best Actress Oscar nominee Jennifer Jones alongside Joseph Cotten, Gregory Peck and Best Supporting Actress nominee Lillian Gish. Following that, director Anthony Mann’s Western film noir Winchester ’73 (1950) features James Stewart as a man obsessed with revenge. Next, writer/director Samuel Fuller’s I Shot Jesse James (1949) explores the emotions of Robert Ford (John Ireland), the man who killed the famous titular outlaw (Reed Hadley). The lineup concludes with director Robert Wise’s psychological Western film noir Blood on the Moon (1948), led by Robert Mitchum as an unemployed cowhand hired by his dishonest friend (Robert Preston) as muscle in a dispute between homesteaders and a cattleman (Tom Tully).

Sitting Bull

Narrated by Oglala Lakota actor Mo Brings Plenty (Yellowstone), this docudrama miniseries airs in two parts, concluding tomorrow night. It offers an overarching exploration of famous Lakota leader Sitting Bull’s remarkable life and accomplishments, including his uniting of Native nations in an extraordinary alliance as American settlers began expanding westward and encroaching on Native territories. The story is told through expert interviews and scripted dramatic sequences, with Sitting Bull portrayed as an adult by Kul Wičaša Lakota actor Michael Spears (Dances With Wolves, 1923).

Spend a day with iconic actress Audrey Hepburn in this marathon featuring five of her most memorable films. Up first is Two for the Road (1967), director Stanley Donen’s romantic comedy/drama that features Hepburn and Albert Finney as a married couple who reflect on their 12-year relationship while on a road trip from England to the French Riviera. After that is Charade (1963), a romantic comedy/mystery also directed by Donen that also features Cary Grant, Walter Matthau, James Coburn and George Kennedy, as well as the Oscar-nominated title song by Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer. Next comes Wait Until Dark (1967), the famous thriller that earned Hepburn a Best Actress nomination as a blind woman terrorized in her apartment by three criminals (played by Alan Arkin, Richard Crenna and Jack Weston) searching for a heroin-stuffed doll they believe is hidden there. Things lighten up again with the next film, 1966’s How to Steal a Million, a heist comedy that costars Peter O’Toole, Eli Wallach and Charles Boyer. The lineup concludes with one of Hepburn’s most famous roles, as Eliza Doolittle alongside Best Actor winner Rex Harrison in the Best Picture-winning musical My Fair Lady (1964).

In this Marvel movie that follows the events of the 2021 series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) now wields the shield as Captain America. He meets with newly elected U.S. President Thaddeus Ross (Harrison Ford) and soon finds himself in the middle of an international incident. In a race against time, Sam must discover the reason behind a nefarious global conspiracy before the true mastermind has the world seeing red — in the form of the fearsome Red Hulk. The film costars Danny Ramirez, Giancarlo Esposito, Tim Blake Nelson, Shira Haas, Carl Lumbly and Xosha Roquemore, with a cameo by Sebastian Stan, who reprises his role as Bucky Barnes.

Turner Classic Movies’ monthlong Tuesday and Thursday night look at the history of Westerns via themed lineups concludes tonight with “The End of an Era.” Several great Westerns captured an era when the American frontier was in decline. This was a period when the country began to fundamentally change, transitioning from a rugged, lawless society to one with more rules and structure. While it can be looked back upon as a time of progress, many living in that era had a hard time adjusting to a new way of life. Tonight’s films show the challenges that came with one way of life ending as the Old West gave way to modern civilization. Up first is cowriter/director Sergio Leone’s epic spaghetti Western Once Upon a Time in the West (1968), led by Henry Fonda (cast against type as a villain), Charles Bronson, Jason Robards and Claudia Cardinale. After that, John Wayne, James Stewart, Vera Miles and Lee Marvin (as the title character) lead director John Ford’s The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962). Two titles from director Sam Peckinpah close out the lineup: The Ballad of Cable Hogue (1970), a Western comedy starring Robards, Stella Stevens, David Warner and Strother Martin, and The Wild Bunch (1969), a revisionist Western led by William Holden, Ernest Borgnine, Robert Ryan, Edmond O’Brien and Warren Oates.

Legendary director/producer/writer Howard Hawks was born in Goshen, Indiana, on May 30, 1896; he passed away Dec. 26, 1977, in Palm Springs, California, at age 81. TCM remembers the filmmaker on the anniversary of his birth today with seven of the films he directed. Up first is Flight Commander (1930; originally known as The Dawn Patrol), a drama set during World War I. Hawks, who had been a flight instructor during the war, flies a plane as a German pilot in an uncredited role in the film. After that is Today We Live (1933), a romantic drama led by Joan Crawford, Gary Cooper, Robert Young and Franchot Tone. Up next is another World War I-set drama: the Best Picture Oscar-nominated Sergeant York (1941), which won Gary Cooper the Best Actor Oscar and earned Hawks the only Best Director nomination of his career. The next film places its action in the Pacific theater of World War II and was made during that conflict: 1943’s Air Force, featuring John Garfield, John Ridgely and Gig Young among its cast. Following that is To Have and Have Not (1944), Hawks’ adaptation of Ernest Hemingway’s novel that marked the first onscreen pairing of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. The Hawks birthday tribute wraps up in the later afternoon/early evening with Tiger Shark (1932), a romantic melodrama led by Edward G. Robinson, Richard Arlen and Zita Johann, and Land of the Pharaohs (1955), a historical epic starring Jack Hawkins and Joan Collins that dramatizes the building of the Great Pyramid of Giza.

When Rena and her family arrive in a secluded polygamist Mormon settlement in Mexico, they are commanded to relinquish all their earthly possessions and devote themselves to the doctrines of the LeBaron brothers, one of them being Ervil (Eric Johnson), whom Rena marries at age 16. His teachings turn toward violence, and Rena looks for ways to escape the oppressive settlement.
