Sister, Sister (Joan Fontaine and Olivia de Havilland)
TCM, beginning at 6am
Catch a Classic!
The daughters of English actress Lillian Fontaine and attorney Walter de Havilland — Olivia, the oldest, and Joan, a little over a year younger — went on to become two of the greatest female stars of Hollywood’s golden age (the only siblings to have won lead acting Academy Awards). While most siblings have their differences, the uneasiness and rivalry between these sisters apparently stemmed from childhood and became very noted and well-documented by the media once each hit their heights of fame, ultimately culminating when the two completely stopped talking following their mother’s passing in 1975. Their parents may have had a favorite when it came to their daughters, but generations of fans have likely found it hard to choose one of these great actresses over the other. Today, you can enjoy both Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine (who was born Joan de Beauvoir de Havilland) in just a few of their respective memorable films. Fontaine leads things off in The Constant Nymph (1943), a romantic drama that earned her a Best Actress nomination alongside Charles Boyer. Next is Devotion (1946), a biographical drama about the literary Brontë sisters featuring de Havilland as Charlotte, Ida Lupino as Emily and Nancy Coleman as Anne. Fontaine takes the screen next in Ivanhoe (1952), the historical adventure also starring Robert Taylor and Elizabeth Taylor. Following that, de Havilland, Henry Fonda and Joan Leslie headline the romantic comedy/drama The Male Animal (1942). The drama Until They Sail (1957) is next, featuring Fontaine, Jean Simmons, Paul Newman, Piper Laurie and Sandra Dee. Then, the romantic comedy Hard to Get (1938) stars de Havilland alongside Dick Powell, who performs the classic Harry Warren and Johnny Mercer song written for the film, “You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby.” The final movie is Alfred Hitchcock’s Best Picture-nominated thriller Suspicion (1941), starring Fontaine and Cary Grant. Fontaine’s performance won her the Best Actress Oscar in the only year that the sisters were up against each other in that category (de Havilland had been nominated for Hold Back the Dawn).
