Orson Welles directed, cowrote and costars with his then-wife Rita Hayworth in this legendary 1947 film noir. Welles plays a seaman who meets a beautiful woman (Hayworth) and her husband (portrayed by Everett Sloane, one of Welles’ collaborators with the Mercury Theatre) aboard a yacht and ends up embroiled in a complex murder plot. The famous climax with a shootout in a hall of mirrors is just one reason why this terrifically filmed and performed production has been preserved in the National Film Registry. The film is just one highlight in today’s “Noir to Die For!” lineup on MOVIES!, which begins early this morning and continues into early tomorrow morning.

Happy Juneteenth! All day long, starting this morning and continuing into early tomorrow morning, Turner Classic Movies celebrates with fun films from across various genres that all prominently feature great music. Up first is the drama Sparkle (1976), whose plot, loosely inspired by the story of the Supremes, follows a girl group formed by three sisters (played by Irene Cara, Lonette McKee and Dwan Smith), whose success may end up ruining their relationship. The film’s highly successful soundtrack album was by Aretha Franklin, with songs written and produced by Curtis Mayfield. Following that are three documentaries: Say Amen, Somebody (1982), about the history of American gospel music, focusing on pioneers Thomas A. Dorsey and “Mother” Willie Mae Ford Smith; How They Got Over (2018), a look at how the upbeat musical form found in African American gospel quartets paved the road to rock ’n’ roll; and Soul Power (2008), a filmed account of the Zaire 74 soul music festival in Kinshasa, Zaire, featuring performances by James Brown, Bill Withers and Miriam Makeba, among others. After the docs comes the musical drama Round Midnight (1986), starring Best Actor Oscar nominee Dexter Gordon as a 1950s jazzman who flees the U.S. to escape his problems, and finds refuge and support in Paris. Herbie Hancock won an Oscar for his musical score. Following Round Midnight, an hourlong 2022 documentary about the making of the film, called Before Midnight, makes its TCM premiere. After that, moving into primetime, is The Wiz (1978), a musical fantasy based on The Wizard of Oz and on the 1974 stage musical The Wiz, led by a cast including Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Nipsey Russell, Richard Pryor, Lena Horne and Mabel King. Quincy Jones earned an Oscar nomination for his adaptation of the musical score, which includes classic songs like “Ease on Down the Road.” Following The Wiz, and making its TCM premiere, is Krush Groove (1985), a musical comedy/drama loosely based on the early days of Def Jam Recordings producer Russell Simmons (played by Blair Underwood in his feature film debut as a character named Russell Walker). The soundtrack is filled with tracks by hip-hop and other urban-oriented musicians, and several artists appear as themselves, including Sheila E., the Fat Boys, New Edition, Beastie Boys and Kurtis Blow. Finally, a few “blaxploitation” action classics round out today’s lineup: Super Fly (1972), directed by Gordon Parks Jr., and headlined by Ron O’Neal and an influential soundtrack by Mayfield; Shaft (1971), directed by Gordon Parks, starring Richard Roundtree and featuring the Oscar-winning song “Theme From Shaft” by Isaac Hayes, who was also nominated for his musical score; and Black Eye (1974), led by Fred Williamson.

Legendary Aussie actor Errol Flynn was born in Battery Point, Tasmania, on this date in 1909 (he passed away at the untimely young age of 50 in Vancouver on Oct. 14, 1959). Turner Classic Movies remembers Flynn today with eight of his films, including several of the swashbucklers and Westerns for which he remains renowned. First up, though, is a romantic comedy, Don’t Bet on Blondes (1935), led by Warren William and Claire Dodd, with Flynn in an early supporting role. After that are more familiar titles from Flynn’s heyday as a star: Dodge City (1939), the actor’s first Western, and one of the eight titles in which he costarred with Olivia de Havilland; Cry Wolf (1947), the only film noir Flynn made, which costars Barbara Stanwyck and Geraldine Brooks; Santa Fe Trail (1940), another Western pairing Flynn and de Havilland; Adventures of Don Juan (1948), the swashbuckling romantic adventure led by Flynn as the title character alongside Viveca Lindfors; The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex (1939), the historical romantic drama featuring Flynn as Earl of Essex, Bette Davis as Queen Elizabeth and de Havilland as Lady Penelope Gray; The Master of Ballantrae (1953), an adventure film based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel; and the Best Picture Oscar-nominated The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), perhaps Flynn’s quintessential swashbuckler, led by the star as the title character, with de Havilland as Maid Marian, Basil Rathbone as Guy of Gisbourne and Claude Rains as Prince John.
