Catch a Classic!
This action-packed, Best Picture Oscar-nominated 1938 adventure classic directed by Michael Curtiz and William Keighley took home three Academy Awards, for its editing, art direction and the rousing musical score by Erich Wolfgang Korngold. Robin Hood (Errol Flynn) accuses Prince John (Claude Rains) of treachery when he discovers his plan of overthrowing the throne while King Richard (Ian Hunter), John’s brother, is being held captive for ransom. Robin escapes John’s knights and assembles a team to help the poor who have been suffering the rich’s oppression. When Robin is lured out of the woods and finds himself sentenced to death, his men come to help, and Robin is left in the ultimate standoff with Prince John. Along with the action, the film also incorporates a subtle love story between Robin and Maid Marian (Olivia De Havilland, in one of her many popular onscreen pairings with Flynn) that does not overpower the initial plot. Basil Rathbone, Melville Cooper and Patric Knowles also star.

Catch a Classic!
Turner Classic Movies’ monthlong Wednesday night salute to legendary actor Gary Cooper continues this evening with seven films, most of which show how, even after becoming an established star, Cooper often returned to the Western genre that helped bring him notice during his early days in the silent movie era. The lineup begins with one of his most iconic performances, in the legendary Western that won him his second Best Actor Oscar (which was accepted on his behalf by John Wayne since Cooper couldn’t attend the ceremony): the Best Picture-nominated High Noon (1952), costarring Grace Kelly in her second feature film. The evening also features several other, perhaps lesser-known, Cooper-led Westerns, including The Hanging Tree (1959), which costars Maria Schell, Karl Malden and George C. Scott; Dallas (1950), also with Ruth Roman and Raymond Massey; Springfield Rifle (1952), featuring Phyllis Thaxter and Lon Chaney Jr.; and the night’s final film, Bright Leaf (1950), directed by Michael Curtiz and costarring Lauren Bacall and Patricia Neal. Interspersed among these titles are a couple of Cooper films from other genres: the Best Picture-nominated drama (sort of Western-adjacent) Friendly Persuasion (1956), which costars Dorothy McGuire and Best Supporting Actor nominee Anthony Perkins; and Task Force (1949), a war film also featuring Jane Wyatt and Walter Brennan.

Celebrating Juneteenth
TCM, beginning at 9:30am
Catch a Classic!
Happy Juneteenth! All day long, starting this morning and continuing into early tomorrow morning, Turner Classic Movies celebrates with fun films from across various genres that all prominently feature great music. Up first is the drama Sparkle (1976), whose plot, loosely inspired by the story of the Supremes, follows a girl group formed by three sisters (played by Irene Cara, Lonette McKee and Dwan Smith), whose success may end up ruining their relationship. The film’s highly successful soundtrack album was by Aretha Franklin, with songs written and produced by Curtis Mayfield. Following that are three documentaries: Say Amen, Somebody (1982), about the history of American gospel music, focusing on pioneers Thomas A. Dorsey and “Mother” Willie Mae Ford Smith; How They Got Over (2018), a look at how the upbeat musical form found in African American gospel quartets paved the road to rock ’n’ roll; and Soul Power (2008), a filmed account of the Zaire 74 soul music festival in Kinshasa, Zaire, featuring performances by James Brown, Bill Withers and Miriam Makeba, among others. After the docs comes the musical drama Round Midnight (1986), starring Best Actor Oscar nominee Dexter Gordon as a 1950s jazzman who flees the U.S. to escape his problems, and finds refuge and support in Paris. Herbie Hancock won an Oscar for his musical score. Following Round Midnight, an hourlong 2022 documentary about the making of the film, called Before Midnight, makes its TCM premiere. After that, moving into primetime, is The Wiz (1978), a musical fantasy based on The Wizard of Oz and on the 1974 stage musical The Wiz, led by a cast including Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Nipsey Russell, Richard Pryor, Lena Horne and Mabel King. Quincy Jones earned an Oscar nomination for his adaptation of the musical score, which includes classic songs like “Ease on Down the Road.” Following The Wiz, and making its TCM premiere, is Krush Groove (1985), a musical comedy/drama loosely based on the early days of Def Jam Recordings producer Russell Simmons (played by Blair Underwood in his feature film debut as a character named Russell Walker). The soundtrack is filled with tracks by hip-hop and other urban-oriented musicians, and several artists appear as themselves, including Sheila E., the Fat Boys, New Edition, Beastie Boys and Kurtis Blow. Finally, a few “blaxploitation” action classics round out today’s lineup: Super Fly (1972), directed by Gordon Parks Jr., and headlined by Ron O’Neal and an influential soundtrack by Mayfield; Shaft (1971), directed by Gordon Parks, starring Richard Roundtree and featuring the Oscar-winning song “Theme From Shaft” by Isaac Hayes, who was also nominated for his musical score; and Black Eye (1974), led by Fred Williamson.
