Inside
Acorn TV
New Series!

This series features dialogue in both English and Welsh.

Rancho Notorious
TCM, 6am
Catch a Classic!

With this 1952 feature, his third and final Western, famed director Fritz Lang unsaddles the genre to create a tempestuous cult favorite that swaps the expansive exteriors one might expect in a film of that type for roiling psychological interiors in a story set at a lawless, remote Wild West outpost called the Chuck-a-Luck. There, bandits, gunslingers, thieves and the like know that — in exchange for a 10% cut of any loot — former barroom belle Altar Keane (Marlene Dietrich) serves as a den mother of sorts, and hides them or keeps them safe. Among the newcomers at this hive of villainy is Vern Haskell (Arthur Kennedy), who poses as an outlaw in hopes of smoking out the desperado who killed his fiancée. Critics have since likened Rancho Notorious and its theme of a man twisted by vengeance to Lang films of wholly different genres, the crime and films noir for which the director was more known, like M and The Big Heat, and it’s certainly one of the more unique Westerns you’ll see.

Journey Into Fear
TCM, 4:15pm
Catch a Classic!

Frequent creative collaborators Joseph Cotten and Orson Welles star in this 1943 spy thriller/film noir that they cowrote (adapting Eric Ambler’s novel of the same name). Welles also produced the film and had originally been slated to direct, but his work on The Magnificent Ambersons precluded him from doing so. So he put the task in the capable hands of Norman Foster, who had earlier directed a number of entries in the Charlie Chan and Mr. Moto mystery film franchises (it also seems likely that Welles did make some contributions to the direction). The cast of Journey Into Fear also includes Dolores del Rio as well as a number of familiar faces from Welles’ famed Mercury Theatre/Mercury Productions besides Cotten, including Ruth Warrick, Agnes Moorehead and Everett Sloane. In the film, Cotten plays a U.S. Navy engineer who is returning to the U.S. with his wife (Warrick) from Istanbul, only to find himself pursued by Nazi agents who are out to kill him. Without a word to his wife, he flees the hotel the couple is staying in and boards a ship; unfortunately, the enemy agents have followed him there.

Evil Twins
TCM, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!

The concept of evil twins has long been used as a dramatic plot point in films, and a number of notable actors have clearly had fun portraying these characters in dual roles. A few of these are spotlighted tonight. First, the psychological thriller Dead Ringer (1964), directed by actor Paul Henreid, features Bette Davis playing twins for the second time, after the 1946 drama A Stolen Life, which airs later tonight/early tomorrow. Next, in the horror movie The Black Room (1935), Boris Karloff plays both an evil baron and his younger brother, who it has been foretold will kill the elder in the titular room of the family castle. Brian De Palma’s psychological horror film Sisters (1972) is next, featuring Margot Kidder as a model and her separated conjoined twin, who is suspected of a brutal murder. Finally, after A Stolen Life, the lineup concludes with the horror film Dead Men Walk (1943), which stars George Zucco as a kindly small-town doctor and the Satan-serving twin brother he has secretly murdered, who returns from the grave for vengeance.

Strangers on a Train
TCM, 12:30pm
Catch a Classic!

Robert Burks rightly earned an Oscar nomination for his black-and-white cinematography in this 1951 suspense classic based on Patricia Highsmith’s novel, but how Alfred Hitchcock did not receive a directing nod, nor Robert Walker an acting nomination for his chilling performance as Bruno Antony, is beyond us. Either way, it is a thrilling watch, as pro tennis player Guy Haines (Farley Granger) has the bad luck of happening to sit next to Walker’s Antony on a train, and their conversation turns toward Antony “jokingly” suggesting that the two men “trade murders” — Antony will kill Haines’ wife if Haines kills Antony’s father. Unfortunately for Haines, the deranged Antony is not joking at all; he proceeds with his end of the deal and makes life increasingly terrifying for Haines in order to get him to hold up his. The film’s classic climax aboard an out-of-control carousel isn’t the only way in which the Master of Suspense takes audiences on a memorable thrill ride with this production.

Bad Day at Black Rock
TCM, 9am
Catch a Classic!

This terrific and suspenseful 1955 drama from Best Director Oscar nominee John Sturges was one of the earliest “Revisionist Westerns,” tweaking elements of the traditional Western genre and even adding in compelling elements of film noir, to boot. Taking place shortly after World War II in the isolated Southwest town of its title, the film finds Black Rock receiving its first outside visitor in many years when one-armed veteran John Macreedy (Best Actor Oscar nominee Spencer Tracy) arrives and tries to visit an Asian American war hero’s family. Quiet about his agenda, Macreedy is received with suspicion by the unusually jumpy locals, and when his few innocuous questions begin to scrape away at the town’s shared, dark secret, he may not live to catch the train out. Robert Ryan, Anne Francis, Dean Jagger, Walter Brennan, Lee Marvin and Ernest Borgnine also star.

Yankee Doodle Dandy
MOVIES!, 10:15am & 8pm
TCM, 8pm
Catch a Classic!

James Cagney really showed that he could do a lot more than just brilliantly play gangsters with his Best Actor Oscar-winning performance as singer/dancer/songwriter George M. Cohan in this Best Picture Oscar-nominated 1942 musical biography about Cohan’s life. Directed with gusto by Oscar nominee Michael Curtiz, the nonstop musical tour de force features plenty of singing and dancing from Cagney in a celebration of the life and career of the music man who lifted a nation and became the first entertainer awarded the United States Congressional Medal of Honor for his contribution to morale. From his early days as a vaudeville performer to his stardom on Broadway, Cohan composed songs that defined his generation, and many of those are performed in the film, including “Harrigan,” “Give My Regards to Broadway,” “Over There,” “You’re a Grand Old Flag” and, of course, “The Yankee Doodle Boy.” Like Cohan himself, Yankee Doodle Dandy has long been a national treasure, and the film was added to the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 1993, as a work of enduring importance to American culture.

Two for One: Joe Dante
TCM, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!

Tonight, TCM primetime host Ben Mankiewicz is joined by director Joe Dante, who introduces two films of his choosing. Dante will offer commentary on each title’s cultural significance and its influence on other films, behind-the-scenes stories, and his own personal reflections on them. The director’s first choice is The Night of the Hunter (1955), the classic thriller led by Robert Mitchum in a chilling performance as corrupt religious fanatic/serial killer Harry Powell, one of the screen’s most unforgettable villains. Shelley Winters, Lillian Gish, Billy Chapin and Sally Jane Bruce costar in the film, which was the only directorial feature for famed actor Charles Laughton. Following that, Dante introduces The Fool Killer (1965), which is making its TCM premiere. The adventure drama follows a 12-year-old boy (Edward Albert) who runs away from home and wanders the countryside of the post-Civil War South, meeting odd characters along the way, including a philosophical ax murderer (Anthony Perkins).
