Clash of the Titans & Jason and the Argonauts
TCM, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!
Stop-motion special effects wizard Ray Harryhausen’s last hurrah before his retirement came in the 1981 adventure epic Clash of the Titans, in which he released the Kraken — a giant, four-armed sea monster — along with a number of other terrifically realized mythical beasts upon thrilled audiences. Harryhausen also produced the film with Charles H. Schneer; the two had worked together on a number of Harryhausen’s earlier special-effects classics, including 1963’s iconic Jason and the Argonauts, which airs after Clash this evening. Both films take their tales from Greek mythology. In Clash, Harry Hamlin stars as Perseus, son of the god Zeus (Laurence Olivier) and Danaë (Vida Taylor), a mortal woman. Over the course of his hero’s journey, Perseus must tame the winged horse Pegasus, slay the snake-haired gorgon Medusa and rescue the beautiful Andromeda (Judi Bowker) from the Kraken. He gets a little help here and there not only from Zeus, but also from other gods, including Hera (Claire Bloom), Aphrodite (Ursula Andress) and Athena (Susan Fleetwood). The film’s array of fantastic creatures also includes the satyr-like monster Calibos, a giant vulture, giant scorpions, a two-headed dog and the mechanical owl Bubo, and they all spring to life thanks to the painstaking and loving detail that Harryhausen always brought to his stop-motion animation. That detail is certainly evident in what is probably Harryhausen’s greatest triumph in terms of bringing the fantastical to thrilling life: the aforementioned Argonauts, based on the Greek tale about the hero Jason (Todd Armstrong), who leads the men of his ship the Argo in a quest to find the fabled Golden Fleece. Again, the real stars of this film are the various Harryhausen-created monsters that Jason and crew encounter along the way. There are harpies; the multi-headed Hydra that guards the Fleece; Talos, the enormous, sword-wielding bronze statue that springs to life to pursue the men; and, of course, the iconic skeleton army, born from the teeth of the slain Hydra, that fights the Argonauts in an amazing, climactic battle that took Harryhausen and his team four months to pull off. All of the fantasy action is set to a rousing musical score by Bernard Herrmann.

Superman
TCM, 8pm
Catch a Classic!
The new Superman movie from director James Gunn that opens in theaters tomorrow (Friday, July 11) looks promising and like it will finally be bringing some fun back to a big-screen presentation of the Man of Steel — like what was seen in 1978’s Superman (aka Superman: The Movie), which airs tonight on TCM. As good as the new movie might be, it will likely do little to diminish the belief among many, across different generations, that Christopher Reeve, the then-unknown who led the ’78 film, remains the quintessential live-action Superman. The actor is fantastic as the iconic hero, and he plays him closely to what most people’s notions of who Superman is as a person probably are. His interplay and charismatic chemistry with Margot Kidder as Lois Lane is also great, as is Reeve’s ability to seemingly slip in and out of his Clark Kent and Superman personas instantly and effortlessly, going from hilariously clumsy and nervous to smooth, calm and soft-spoken-yet-confident just like that. Thanks also to Gene Hackman’s cheeky-yet-ruthless performance as criminal genius Lex Luthor, whose plot to destroy the West Coast sets up scenarios that definitely do look like a job for Superman; John Williams’ rousing, Oscar-nominated musical score that makes even the opening credits a thrilling experience (bits of the main theme were even referenced in trailers for the new Superman, showing how iconically associated with the hero it has become); visual effects that earned a Special Achievement Oscar and followed through on the film’s tagline that “You’ll believe a man can fly”; and, above all, director Richard Donner’s deft ability to re-create the colorful feel of a comic book without descending into camp even while having moments of humor amid the thrills and genuine emotional moments; Superman became the first blockbuster of the modern superhero movie era, and is arguably still the best. TCM is following the film with two other Reeve-led titles that show how the actor could do a lot more than just be Superman: the romantic drama Somewhere in Time (1980), costarring Jane Seymour, and the comedic thriller Deathtrap (1982), also with Michael Caine.

Remembering David Lynch
TCM, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!
Famous, and famously unique, filmmaker David Lynch passed away earlier this year at age 78 (he was born in Missoula, Montana, on Jan. 20, 1946; he died in Los Angeles on Jan. 16). Turner Classic Movies remembers the legendary artist tonight with five of the 10 feature films he directed during his career. Up first is what may have been one of Lynch’s more unexpected projects for some people, but still garnered a lot of acclaim: the G-rated, relatively straightforward and not-at-all surreal biographical drama The Straight Story (1999), which is making its TCM premiere. Pretty mainstream and accessible compared with most of Lynch’s other works (it was even released by Walt Disney Pictures), this film is led by Best Actor Oscar nominee Richard Farnsworth, Sissy Spacek and Harry Dean Stanton. Following that, the lineup offers increasingly strange and often nightmarish levels of Lynchian weirdness, with Blue Velvet (1986), a neo-noir mystery led by Kyle MacLachlan, Isabella Rossellini, Dennis Hopper and Laura Dern, which earned Lynch the second of his three Best Director nominations; Wild at Heart (1990), a dark comedy/romantic crime drama/thriller starring Dern, Nicolas Cage and Willem Dafoe; Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992), a psychological horror film that served as a prequel to Lynch’s surreal 1990-91 TV drama Twin Peaks; and Eraserhead (1977), Lynch’s first feature and a truly wild and nearly inexplicable foray into surreal body horror that still retains its aura as the epitome of the phrase “cult film.”
