William Clark Gable, once known (and probably still known by many) as the King of Hollywood thanks to his dashing good looks and amazing onscreen presence and talent, will be featured in today’s Summer Under the Stars lineup with 12 of his memorable films. Among the highlights, of course, is It Happened One Night (1934), the iconic screwball comedy that is one of only three movies to have swept the “Big Five” Oscar categories. Gable also earned a Best Actor nomination — as did his costars, Charles Laughton and Franchot Tone — in another classic airing today: the Best Picture-winning historical adventure/drama Mutiny on the Bounty (1935). Also of note today are two of the six films in which Gable appeared with Jean Harlow, the adventure drama China Seas (1935) and the romantic comedy Wife vs. Secretary (1936), also with Myrna Loy; another romantic adventure drama, John Ford’s Mogambo (1953), also featuring Best Actress nominee Ava Gardner and Best Supporting Actress nominee Grace Kelly; the Western Lone Star (1952), which also stars Gardner; Teacher’s Pet (1958), also with Doris Day, Best Supporting Actor nominee Gig Young and Mamie Van Doren; and director John Huston’s modern-day Western The Misfits (1961), featuring both Gable and Marilyn Monroe in their final completed film roles before their deaths.

The Whole Story With Anderson Cooper: “Ecuador: The Narco Superhighway”
CNN, 9pm
In this new episode, CNN Senior National Correspondent David Culver goes inside the brutal cocaine trafficking system which has made Ecuador the deadliest country in Latin America. Since 2018, Ecuador’s homicide rate has surged by 580%, with 2025 on track to be Ecuador’s deadliest year on record. With roughly 70% of the world’s cocaine moving through Ecuador, gangs are at war for control of an underground global economy worth tens of billions of dollars a year. In “Ecuador: The Narco Superhighway,” Culver goes deep inside a system that pulls in the poor, empowers the brutal and protects the powerful, all to indulge the habit of a global addiction with local Ecuadorians caught in the undertow. “We spent more than two weeks in fishing villages, border towns, major cities and ports … places where the violence isn’t just a headline, it’s part of daily life. We met grieving families, fishermen pulled into the trade, even gang members who claim they had no other option but to commit horrific acts, which they openly admit to,” says Culver. “This isn’t just a story about drugs. It’s about how power, poverty, and global demand collide in Ecuador.”

Alfred Hitchcock Icon-a-Thon
MOVIES!, beginning at 8:25am
Catch a Classic!
Grab a seat (and prepare to be on the edge of it most of the time) for this five-film lineup of classic titles directed by “Master of Suspense” Alfred Hitchcock. It kicks off with North by Northwest (1959), the fun thriller written by Oscar nominee Ernest Lehman that takes adman Roger Thornhill (Cary Grant) on a chase across the country after he is mistaken for a spy by enemy agents James Mason and Martin Landau. Eva Marie Saint costars as a woman who may not be who she appears to be. After that is Strangers on a Train (1951), featuring Robert Walker in a funny yet terrifying performance as a psycho who wants to “trade murders” with the tennis pro (Farley Granger) he happens to bump into on the train. The lineup continues with one of Hitch’s British films, the mystery/thriller The Lady Vanishes (1938), led by Margaret Lockwood, Michael Redgrave and May Whitty. Next is the drama Lifeboat (1944), which follows the survivors aboard the titular craft after their ship has been sunk by a German U-boat. Hitchcock earned a Best Director nomination here (perhaps for the clever way he manages to sneak one of his trademark cameos into this one-set drama alone). The day concludes with The Wrong Man (1956), whose title not only reflects its story but also the themes in a number of other Hitchcock films, as well. This one is perhaps one of the most suspenseful since it’s based on an actual case where an innocent man (played by Henry Fonda) was arrested and charged after being mistaken for an armed robber. Vera Miles costars.
